If you are at all interested in the culture and crafts of Lao, then Lao Textile is a must see.
Carol Cassidy’s factory produces high quality textiles in both modern and traditional designs. The factory is located in a lovely French colonial villa. It is a fascinating treat to see all stages of the process from washing and drying the silks to, weaving the fabrics and then, of course, the beautiful finished products. We were mesmerized watching these skilled workers create such beautiful fabrics.
We were fortunate enough to meet Ms. Cassidy. And, it was a pleasure to hear her talk about not only the weaving and design processes, but the country as a whole.
The visit to Lao Textiles was one of the highlights of our time in Vientiane.

This place is a must if you are interested and love handicrafts. Don't go expecting cheap prices. Each piece here is a work of art. . Prices reflect the energy and time that is put in a piece of work.

In a beautiful French Colonial villa surrounded by a rambly garden with an intersting veteran car in it, you will find Carol Cassidy amid her beautiful silks. Lao textiles, speaking generally, are truly gorgeous and opulent and to be found throughout the country in markets and specialist shops and galleries. They are all lovely and highly priced. Lao Textiles, the business, provides superlative quality and a marvellous variety. There is a large range available, from large wall hangings and throws in very traditional patterns, through to the most lustrous and beautiful squarves and shawls in a variety of sizes, textures and weaves. They're all expensive. But if you've seen the labourious processes involved in producing these pieces, you will understand why. The weaving work room is on site and you can visit it and see the women working. Or you can just peep in through the window to the rear of the showroom.
In the end I didn't buy silks but I did find some of those handwoven vine totes, which are made by local people and are very strong. I did buy one of those and avoided the high market prices. I liked the fact that I could be assured that they wouldn't be stocking ones of inferior quality and certainly, mine does heavy duty at each vege market visit and seems to be taking the strain. You need cash to buy these, whereas there are card facilities for other items.
Just a couple of things to note; the showroom has a split day and closes for quite a long lunch hour starting at 12 midday, I think it was. So do check the opening times, in order to save you a disappointment. And the second thing is that you need to ring the buzzer at the front door to be let in. The staff are charming and will welcome you warmly.

I was trying to look for traditional handicrafts in vain, since there aren’t that many places available in Laos and most of them were closed during the weekends. But the visit to Carol Cassidy was wonderful. We got to visit the workshop and see how every piece was hand made, woven using traditional Laotian method (which was so intricate). The products were amazing! The owner spent time to introduce me to the process and helped me understand the symbolism behind Laotian patterns and spiritual meaning of each pattern. When I couldn’t find the product I was looking for he even directed me to other stores with detailed reviews. It was a wonderful experience and I’m very gateful to the owner.

This is a unique place where you can find high quality textiles. Also on the back you can check how they make them. We spent long time trying to find our unique piece for home. A lot of choices and gorgeous designs.

We were lucky today that Carol's husband was available to guide us around the workroom, introducing us to the craftspeople who create these magnificent textiles, he descrubes some of the processes and demomstrated thier uses. His passion is infectious. This oppurtunity gave the visit much meaning and delight in the skill of the master weavers working today.
Looking around the showroom consolidated the experience. A must for those who love textiles, hand work and appreciate the preservation of the skills of the ages.

여행자거리에 위치하고 있어서 쉽게 찾아갈 수 있는데요. 작업장이 함께 있어서 전시된 상품의 공정과정등을 살짝 엿볼 수 있었답니다. 건물 자체가 목조건물이고, 길게 늘어진 스카프, 직조천 등이 너무 아름다웠습니다. 배낭여행자가 제 예산으로는 살 수 있는 천들이 거의 없었지만, 그래도 한 번씩 가서 아름다운 직조천이나 스카프 등을 살펴보길 추천드려요! (참 문이 닫혀있곤 하는데, 벨을 눌르셔야 해요!)
