Although the location of this place was a little hard to pinpoint (google maps doesn’t go to this spot) it was worth visiting. We were interested in looking at local art, and how it is evolving. We didn’t expect to buy something, but found a painting we really liked and so embarked on the process of negotiating, getting cash, and packing for transport. All part of the adventure.

A huge repository of students work and fine art. Some not so good and some excellent works by famed and student Laoatian artists. Found our way into the dusty and untouched for years sculpture gallery, an absolute mass of old and dusty works. If you love art this is a fascinating place to hunt through and see real life art and life in Vientiane. Not to be missed. Do not expect explanations and beautiful displays, this is raw art at its finest. We bought 3 works and could easily have bought more. If anyone can get an e mail adress to this place please let me know I want to buy another work or two. Great find.

This exhibit hall for the National Institute is very conveniently located- a walkable distance from most places in town. And if you are driving, there is parking. It is a modest structure and the collection is small, but the generally *large* works show a pleasant cross-section of Lao life. There are also additional works on display and stacked in an adjacent room- these are for sale and are reasonably priced- perfect for a sweet souvenir of Laos to hang on your wall back home!

что-то вроде музея современного искусства. вполне неплохо, даже довольно любопытно, здесь висит много картин лаосских художников - довольно своеобразно

Many large paintings representing Laotian people. Large dimly lit hall. Note that the current picture (pink building) is NOT this attraction. Location: Khoun Boulom Road immediately east of Chao Anou Road

Художественная галерея молодых художников Лаоса!
Очень любопытная галерея для любителей рисовать,выставляется много работы молодых художников,и более опытных,а так же преподавателей при галереи,некоторые можно даже приобрести!Так же мы обратили внимание на прекрасные скульптуры и инсталляции очень здорово что они так хорошо развивают искусство!

Je suis allé voir ce "musée" pour la peinture de Marc Leguay qui s'y trouve. En soi, cela vaut le déplacement. Par contre, le reste de l'exposition, dans une salle unique, est vraiment tristounet. Le personnel ne respecte pas les horaires (j'y suis déjà allé et ai trouvé porte close) et à part allumer les lumières à la demande, il ne fait rien (il faut dire que c'est gratuit). Les oeuvres, une quarantaine en tout, ne font preuve que de peu d'originalité, à quelques rares exceptions près. Bref, ceci témoigne de la négligence totale par rapport aux arts plastiques qui caractérise le pays à l'heure actuelle.

This centre showcases Lao artists and their paintings and artwork. This is the place to go to discover the future of Laotian art and maybe buy a painting at a reasonable price.

Tommy, were they able to package and ship your purchases? Or did you take them back on the airline? Seems it would be difficult to do that with art work.
I visited the Art Institute in 1989. I am curious to know of changes and improvements in the school.

We've only visited once so aren't in a position to comment on changes. As I mentioned in my review in July, it's primarily a large hall with huge paintings of Laos scenes on all sides.
