This large complex of ruins is well worth visiting if you are in the area. The views are worth it alone but the history makes the location more enriching. There is very little labeling so having a guide or studying it ahead of time is a must. We went in the afternoon and got good light for photos. There is a large platform near the entrance to view the full complex then you can walk into the main area and look around.

The city of Nimas was laid out in the 3rd century BC and was the capital of the Parthian Empire. It consists of two parts: Novaya Nisa (place where the ancient city was located) and Staraya Nisa (here a fortress was erected).

A UNESCO site best when viewed after visiting the museum. A guide is critical to understanding what you are looking at.
Great place to reflect on the significance of history of the region.

One of the oldest cities of the Persian era. Apparently it was the royal residence of the Persian kings. Founded apparently about 250 BC. It was one of the main trade centers of the time on the Silk Road.
It ⁇ ins many structures with the walls standing and some with poor maintenance.

The well-cultured Westerner, but not a specialist in the Near East, uses the name "Parthians" indifferently to refer to two distinct dynasties that succeeded one another in dominion over the area of today's Iran and nearby regions: the "Arsacids" dynasty, since 247BC until 224AD, and the “Sasanian” dynasty, since 224 until 640AD.
Nisa should be referred to the Arsacid dynasty, that is, to that dynasty whose founder Arsaces I managed to subtract a large part of the Near East from the empire of the Seleucid kings, heirs of Alexander the Great.
Nisa is among the cities founded by Arsaces I, it was subsequently and until the 1st century BC used as a place for royal tombs, and in some phases also as a royal residence. Which, note well, doesn't automatically mean that throughout this period it was the capital city of the Arsacids: in this function Seleucia on the Tigris, Ecbatana (former capital of the Medes) and finally Ctesiphon (later brought to maximum splendor by the Sassanid successors) also had subsequently functioned.
It's noteworthy that Nisa was located not in the heart of the Arsacid empire, but on its northern border. Its function as an outpost towards the warlike populations of Central Asia at the time was thus enhanced. But at the same time this favors its function as a hub for traffic towards that area.
Given the power and territorial extension of the empire, it isn't surprising that Nisa was a large and comfortable city, as excavations (from the 1940s onwards) have gradually discovered.
Our visit took place entirely in the Old Nisa area, through the fortress and its ceremonial rooms (primarily the so-called Square House and the so-called Round Hall, which can still be imagined today as splendid), the temple, the service buildings, its streets and its alleys.
It must be admitted that it isn't easy, through the raw brick walls which are often very eroded over time, to understand the original appearance of the fortress. The maquette available in the small museum helps a lot in this.
The strength of the site is also evident, not only for the raised area on which it stands, but also for the proximity to the Kopet Dag range, which through sophisticated hydraulic works (such as the qanats, for which the Persian area has been famous for millennia ) ensured water to the city.
A final note: it's essential, in order to grasp an adequate vision of Old Nisa, to have experience of the outstanding findings preserved in the archaeological museum in Ashgabat,
Overall, the Nisa site ranks worthy alongside Merv, Konye-Urgench and Gonur Depe, among the four leading archaeological sites in Turkmenistan.

Dies sollte man vermeide

In Ashgabat you can always stop any car, and negotiate with them to take you there.
Since gas is very cheap there, it does not cost much to this method )))
