One arrives to this underground wonder through the most ordinary of ways: What looks like a door blocking a construction site. Once inside the stalagmites and stalactites seem to stretch forever (five city blocks to be precise) with historical markers and engraved graffiti in different languages guiding you.
The cave is entirely man-made and legend has it that it's quarry was used in both the construction of the first and second temple. The Ottoman King Suleiman sealed the caves in the 16th century to prevent the fearing that invaders would be able to use it to dig tunnels right into the heart of Jerusalem, which made for a monumental find in 1854 when an American missionary found the entrance.

This attraction is known as Solmon's Quarries, Zedekiah's Cave and many other names. It's an underground cave, that was excavated over several thousand years It's under the Muslim Quarter, near the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City. The area is around 5 acres (2000 square meters). Solomon's Quarries falls into the "odd but interesting" category.

Beautiful and impressive place but not worth the ticket price because in 15 minutes you can do the complete tour.

Cave is still closed (28th of May, 2023). As is typical in Jerusalem, there is no information, no official website and no way to find out about this until you get here. Apparently there is construction happening, which has been the case for 2 years. A "worker" who was at the cave when we visited claimed it will be open in 1month. We'll see. Too late for us sadly.
Israel really needs to do a better job of providing information, ticketing and opening hours of historic sites for tourists.

Closed as of November 2022. We were at the entrance and there were still signs on the gate that it is still under construction. I have been in there several times before in previous years and it is a great historical location to visit. Ark of the covenant was taken up to the Garden Tomb grounds via a hidden tunnel in Zedekiah's Cave.

Interesting cave or former quarry of stone for the rest of the Old City in Herodian times, due to Covid 19, sometimes it maybe closed and they are also doing some restorations, it is a huge site, and in the past they did concerts there

אני מודה שאם במסגרת הטיול שהצטרפתי אליו, לא היה מופע של דיקלה במערת צידקיהו, אני לא הייתי מבקר במקום ונחשף ליופיו המכשף. הגענו בשעת ערב חצי שעה לפני תחילת המופע, נכנסנו פנימה למערה ענקית שאינה נגמרת, לאורך הדרך המרוצפת אלפי נרות בשני צידי השביל. זה כשלעצמו כבר , הכניס אותנו לאוירה.מיותר לציין שהנופעה המרגשת של דיקלה במקום המיוחד הזה, תיצרב בליבי לעד

It looks like this was the place where many of the stones were cut that made up the original temple. It is huge. We were in it in November of 2019 and they were still opening up new pathways. You can see where a craftsman started to cut on one of the pillars. The foreman probably stopped him as that pillar held up tons of rock overhead. At the very back is a spring called Zedekiah's tears. Nice cool place to visit on hot days, Entrance fee was minimal.

Maybe this is the case with caves in general but this particular one was very powerful in its expanse and depth and not a little spooky. I almost turned around and left, to be honest, because it was almost too much for me to take in, in terms of the strength of the rock but I am glad I went in to see this quarry that had been the source of building material for the old city (amongst other interesting theories including the reason for its name). Worth a visit.

This can be tricky. As I recall it is supposed to be open Sunday to Thursday and Saturday but closed Fridays. Nevertheless, there have been times when I went during "opening hours" and it was closed. So, the answer is "yes" it is supposed to be open Saturday but don't be surprised if it is closed. If there is any tension or hint of trouble around Damascus Gate, the cave closes.

Probably your best bet is the enormous parking lot beside/behind the Palestinian Pottery shop on Nablus Rd. opposite the Legacy Hotel. It is about a 5-7 minute walk from the parking lot to the cave straight down (walking south) along Nablus Rd. About halfway along this walk you really should pop in and see the beautiful Garden Tomb; entry is free.

I am very confused I am to visit Jerusalem around October 26 2019. is the caves/quarries closed Friday..muslim in east Jerusalem or is it closed Saturday sabbath. some say it is open Friday closed Saturday other website say closed Friday open Saturday.i s there r a website e-mail or telephone nmber in the archeological or park or east Jerusalem that one can call to find the open closed days hours and where to get tickets. ..the website and e-mail under trip advisor shows a blank page.
