Good to see
It is a bit in the middle of nowhere! No signs and a bit hard to get to! I was not expecting much but when arrived, two very welcoming men were on the gate, entry is free of charge, very nice castle and easy to reach! I would only recommend to clean more the dirts but overall good experience

Castle of the Slave
Qasr al-Abd is the name of a partially restored unfinished Hellenistic palace that dates to the 2nd century BC. Not much is known about Qasr al-Abd’s history, which by the way is more interesting than the actual ruins. The intended purpose of the palace is still a mystery. Was it a summer home, part of a larger estate, or a family mausoleum? It’s said to have been built by Herkanus, governor of Ammon and head of the wealthy and powerful Tobiad family. The name in Arabic translates to Castle of the Slave, and as governor, Herkanus would have been considered a slave to the people (our guide shared a more interesting local legend). Regardless of its intended purpose, construction of the palace was never finished and the earthquake of 365 AD left it in ruins. The castle has been partially restored so at least you’ll have a glimpse of its former beauty. Qasr-al-Abd is noteworthy for the architecture (the only Hellenistic monument discovered in Jordan), the large stone blocks used in its construction, and for the carved panthers and lions decorating the façade. I visited as part of a Gate 1 tour that included the nearby caves and lunch at the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative (which was by far the most enjoyable part of the afternoon, thank you ladies!).

Il Castello di Marmo Bianco

Leopards and Lions
These are carefully maintained ruins from an opulant castle that was never completed due to destruction by an earthquake. Still, you can see enough to imagine what was planned. The carved lions are still visible on the roof, and the carved leopards are still ready to be fountains, with their mouths open to dispense water into the moat that was supposed to surround the castle.

Over Hyped & Not Worth
We read a lot about it & tought of exploring the place. You have to drive almost 60 KM outside Amman to come to this place. It is situated in beautiful Iraq-Al-Amir town full of olive plantations & beautiful valley. The place is covered in Jordan Pass but still some local guard at the gate demands 1 JOD per person & we have no choice but to pay. The place is not in good shape & hardly any information is available on the site.
