Madaba was the first point in my Jordan trip. Easily approachable from the airport, Madaba was the right stop to stretch the legs after a long flight. The various attractions make a good walking tour. The guides available are not the best but they do make the effort to show the mosaics. The church and the various mosaics interspersed by the meandering streets make a touristy ambience. The only thing absent were the tourists! Good for a few hours. Especially when the target is Petra.

The St. George's Church houses a precious 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Part of it contains the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction especially Jerusalem. I find it amazing how works of art this old and precious are displayed in other countries. This would be under class in a climate controlled environment if it were in a museum in the States, but here you are mere feet from history so old. Our guide gave us a terrific description of the mosaic in an air conditioned room prior to entering the church. It was very helpful to understand what I was looking at and appreciate it's beauty. Comparing the two is unimaginable how they did this so many years ago. There are many other mosaics that fill the walls of this little church that are worth your time to explore. Our time was limited so I took lots of photos to revisit the beauty when we got home.

Estando alojado en Ammán, decidí hacer un tour de un día a Mar Muerto, Madaba, Monte Nebo y el lugar del Bautismo de Jesús, por lo cual contraté el servicio desde el hotel en el cual estaba alojado. No podría estar más feliz con el día inolvidable que pasé. Por un costo total de unos 60 dinares (que incluyó traslados, entradas a los sitios, un almuerzo buffet y el acceso a un complejo de piscinas y a la playa del mar Muerto), en un grupo pequeño a cargo del excepcional chofer-guía Yamil, pasamos un día extraordinario desde que nos fueron a buscar al hotel hasta que nos volvieron a dejar en él. Luego de salir de Ammán fuimos al monte Nebo, pasamos por el complejo La Storia, recorrimos Madaba incluyendo la visita a la iglesia ortodoxa de San Jorge y el famoso mosaico, luego recorrimos el lugar del bautismo de Jesús, el río Jordán y, como broche de oro, fuimos a almorzar al complejo Amman Beach Resort donde no sólo accedimos a la playa sobre el mar Muerto (para la clásica foto flotando en sus aguas), sino que también nos refrescamos disfrutando de sus maravillosas piscinas. Este día inolvidable cerró con una puesta de sol única, como sólo los países de Medio Oriente pueden ofrecer. Recomiendo este tour maravilloso (que duró unas 9 horas en total) por permitirme conocer tanto de Jordania en sólo un día, a pesar de que nos trasladamos tranquilos, sin apuro en ningún momento. Realmente inolvidable.

An astonishing fragments of Madaba's Byzantine Mosaic Map about 10.5 metres long and 5 metres wide, shows the road map of the Roman Byzantine Empire dating as far as 6th Century
Imagine how it was intricately done and how the lay out was designed to give focus on the Holy Land at the heart of this 700,000 to 800,000 pieces of mosaic cubes.
The colours are original and natural. There is no doubt that the Bible's Old Testament could have been the inspiration.
There's a sense of purpose for the map. A mixture of Literary, Biblical and Artistic Triumph.
To understand this wonderful mosaic, we bought a book outside St George Church's shop. "The Mosaic Map of Madaba " by Herbert Dinner for JOD 10.00 and worth the price.
If you are keen in Biblical Stories, Ancient Antiquities or an Artistic Enthusiast make a detour to visit St George Church at Madaba Jordan.

I was absolutely thrilled when I stumbled upon " Nebo's Pearl" on our way to Mt. Nebo. This is a trade school where handicapped people are taught to be artisans. Some do the most intricate mosaics in that part of the world. Elegant! Some women are taught to work with fabrics and threads. You can watch as they preform their skills. Their final products are treasures! Quite the find!
