This fort/museum is a must see in Paramaribo. Important if you want to know more about history. On Sunday morning there is a guided tour, try to go, very worthwhile.

One of the first things we did on our 1st full day in Paramaribo was look in the direction of Fort Zeelandia. A historic place, not only because of its strategic location on the river, but also because of the formative history that took place there.
It is not even a large and majestic fortress, but you are still fully aware of the significance of this complex in the development of Suriname. In the past, of course, as a strategic fortress in the colonial struggle, but later also the place where the commanders of the revolution brutally exercised their power. It's all there.
Fort Zeelandia is a place to experience with reverence.

A lovingly furnished and maintained museum in a historic location. Warm welcome. There were only a few visitors. The information on the signs is very clear. Entrance is only 200 Surinamese dollars, with admission to the small museum across the street included.

The fort is definitely a must-see while in Paramaribo. The fort and museum gives a nice history of Suriname from its earliest times to more recent times. This is a good activity to spend about 45 minutes to an hour. However, be aware that most signage is in Dutch, and only a few items have English explanations.

Zeker een aanrader en de moeite waard om te bezoeken als je in Paramaribo bent. Niet alleen vanwege het mooi gerestaureerde historische fort, het informatieve cultuur historisch museum, maar ook de plek van de decembermoorden waarvan de sporen ook nog steeds zichtbaar zijn in de muren van het fort en de herdenking plek hiervan.

The biggest and most important museum in Suriname. The fort itself is already an attraction and very well maintained. You get great views of the Suriname River from the eastern part of the structure. The museum contains amongst other things an Apotheek from colonial times, typical Surinamese items from the past, information about the arrival of the different ethnic groups in Suriname, information about slavery that took place there and also information about archaeological sites due to Amerindian civilization. I went there with my fiancee during the week and we were the only ones. The lady at the entrance was very friendly and even gave us a book about archaeology in Suriname for free.

Erg imposant om een bezoek te brengen aan Fort Zeelandia gezien de historie .

The fort is well located, which is a mystery how they could foresee that in 1640! I mean De Gadri restaurant so close and all those UNESCO heritage buildings surrounding. The buildings are in good condition and the artifacts nicely displayed. Being that I don't speak Dutch, I could just look at the items and imagine their use so many years ago in this remote corner of the new world. The admission was 170S$, which I think is higher than previously mentioned, one of the rooms was air conditioned. The view of the river from here is good and likely to be breezy as well. There is a nice park in front of the fort with benches in the shade for a rest. But if you sit too long a tout (tours? Transport?) or beggar will spot you as a tourist and visit. Then the birds which have been serenading you from the trees may decide to crap on you as well. All this happened to me; it was overall a pleasant experience

There is a great story to tell here but although the location speaks for itself and has a historic feel, the copious explanation boards are only on Dutch. Such a shame too as there is so much to learn here and as Suriname opens up to the non-Dutch speaking world.
