What a delightful surprise! Driving from Franklin, NE, to Gardner, KS. Stopped at this cabin of the man who wrote the Kansas State Song. The area has been preserved and a walking trail through the surrounding area added. An unexpected find. Glad we stopped. They sure lived in small places. This place lets you see how very small it could be.

If you are into history or just the real Kansas as it was, this is a nice stop. Restoration work on the cabin was done with historical integrity to the extent possible.
It is humbling to see the home of a family of five. Life was different!
There is plenty of room to roam and stretch your legs if you wish. Our early teen granddaughter thought it was cool and wished her mother could have seen it too. Her younger sister said it was "interesting."

I had read about this place for many years but never visiting. When our family was in the area recently we finally stopped. They have done some significant restoration of this site over the past 2-3 years. The cabin is nicely restored.

We stumbled on this place driving from Salina, Kansas to Kearney, Nebraska. Surrounded mainly by corn fields, this historical place was an easy stop off on Kansas SH-8. Lots of local vegetation maintained by the local 4-H club.

Kids found it fascinating. We could have spent a lot more time walking the trails and looking for wildlife.

This is a great stop - particularly if you are from Kansas and revere our state song. The cabin has been restored again, and the recent movie release has increased interest. If you go, be sure to go inside if you can and also sign the guestbook.
There are a couple of walking paths through the forest on the site. It is a good place to look for birds or other wildlife. We really did see deer on this pathway.

When i take my three girls on our yearly trips around Kansas, I try to hit plenty ofhistorical sites. My girls are familiar with the song and I was surprised how excited they we're to see the actual cabin where the song was written. It is one of those places that after you go once, you probably won't go again, but it was worth it and a very memorable experience. I can appreciate all the work that was recently done to preserve this piece of Kansas history.

My parents and I stopped by on our way home. The house was nicely redone and looks like it should. If you are looking for something unique check it out. You can simply check out the house or venture out on a trail.

Description In 1871, in his dugout on the bank of the West Beaver Creek in Smith County, KS, Dr. Brewster Higley VI penned the words to a poem titled "My Western Home". It was later set to music by Dan Kelly and the refrain added by Judge John Harlan; the song "Home on the Range" was born. 785-697-2347.
The cabin has been restored and lets one imagine what it would be like to live on the prairie in the 1870s. foot bridges and walking paths have been installed. It's a great place to stop for a picnic, spend the day and enjoy some Kansas history and the outdoors.
