We tried Seoul Escape Room recently in Korea and had an awful experience that I wanted to share. It seems to mirror someone else’s experience, which is a shame since there are many very positive comments from this group, albeit all posted several years ago. I believe SER is a chain, so perhaps our poor experience is unique to a particular location. Nonetheless, there are specific criticisms that I think enthusiasts would find problematic.
We played the CIA game, which is their most difficult. We usually go for the most challenging rooms at each location, and this hasn’t been a problem for us. We were worried about the recent post that highlighted an inattentive GM. We saw this right away when he gave us an electronic tablet to check in and left us alone for 15 minutes. After filling out all of the information, we weren’t sure what to do. We pressed the button on the tablet that said we were ready to start the game. And still waited. When the GM finally came back, we showed him that we had pressed the button in the tablet and he said it was fine. However, my concerns were totally realized when we entered the room and we saw that we had 62 minutes left for a 75 minute game. They did not give us those minutes back.
The puzzles themselves were a blend of ciphers, logic, and pattern recognition… nothing memorable. Kind of like playing an extra long EXIT home escape game. I know some enthusiasts would find that disappointing, but I thought it was fine. My partner commented that a bit more novelty in some of the puzzles would have been nice. There was a nice use of technology and the physical set of a CIA interrogation room looked great. The puzzles were linear. I thought the hint system was excellent: you simply type in a four letter code into the tablet that they leave with you, and you get a hint. Our GM said we were limited to six hints. Asking for more help with the same code eventually gets you the answer to open the next lock.
My major criticism is that the mechanisms used to make this room “the most difficult” and warrant the longer 75 minute time were all tricks to slow players down rather than legitimately challenge them. I think these are ER designs that enthusiasts generally dislike. Instead of a few interesting or challenging puzzles, there were just a lot of linear, simple ones. Players were separated into two rooms, requiring communication of codes and ciphers. Rooms were dark, and there was quite a bit of reading (both Korean and English were used though, with no language problems). A couple puzzles require “busy work”, like folding a bunch of papers. This room also uses red herrings, which I actually thought was ok here but I know many absolutely hate that in an ER.
My other major criticism was that one puzzle on a document was photocopied at the wrong scale, and was therefore unsolvable when it was supposed to be matched up to another document. This is what really killed us, since we took too long to realize it was their mistake before using the hint system to get the answer.
The GM came in when the clock struck zero, ignoring the fact that we lost 12 minutes to start. It was a shame too since we were still a few puzzles away from the end, but I think I could see what the finale was. There was no offer to show us the rest of the room (which is fine), but the attitude was mostly “it’s time to get out”. I refused to leave without pointing out the problem with the photocopied puzzle. The GM eventually understood after trying it himself, and he said ok but was unapologetic and didn’t really seem to care at all about how that affected our experience.
Overall, I like the promise of this room, but I’m just very disappointed with the execution, with much of that disappointment caused by the GM. Even so, I think the timing of the room is about right. With another 20 minutes, which is how much time we lost at the beginning and with the messed up puzzle, I think we would have been ok. Hopefully this review helps others!
