Not the most enjoyable hike of a mountain I have ever had, as it rained very heavily 30 minutes off from the peak which was very annoying on what was a difficult enough ascent over big slabs of rock and stones.
Starts off gentle enough but the last hour or so can be tough enough, and even tougher in the wet weather so I am not so sure I got to the actual peak of the Dobongsan but I got close enough. I didn't want to risk the final push in the extreme rain and wind, and decided since i had already got the peak in the Bukhansan that it wasn't worth the danger.
The peak could have had better signposting as from the temple below it wasn't clear at all where to go, and if it wasn't for some people ahead of me I probably would have got completely lost.

I’m glad I didn’t listen to the more extreme reviews - on here and other sites (AllTrails- I’m looking at you!)- otherwise I probably wouldn’t have done it. Yes it is hard, especially the last bit, and if you have a fear of heights the last bit with its 360 degree views can be a little nerve racking, but there’s no clinging to a wire, dragging yourself up a narrow path whilst trying to avoid the 500m drop on the other side (well, not much of that anyway). The climb can be divided into 4- the east first third (think steps, pathways and easy paths - lulling you into a false sense of security), then the middle third - the paths disappear, there’s a bit of bouldering and holding on to railings; then the last third is divided into 2 - hard and the final 10 mins of very hard (pulling yourself up the aforementioned railings), and then- bang - you’re up top and it’s all worth it!

Easy 1 or 2 tube ( line 4 + line 1) to Dogdaemun station where is an easy walk through a multitude of outdoor clothing outfitters ( so if you haven’t got your walking clothes with you no excuses!)
We climbed on a sunny 20 degrees Spring day but the Koreans were all dressed in full walking gear - waterproofs donned and 80% wearing masks up the mountain! ( legal requirement to wear had ended ). Don’t under estimate this. We walk a lot yet was a 4 hour 6 mile 2500’ slog especially the final 1/3rd which has a lot of fixed railing ( very helpful). It’s not technical but if you haven’t done bolder scrambling will be a new experience.
Great views and sense of achieving something. Well recommended. No guide needed. Follow the signs !

A perfect escape from bustling Seoul city, just 40 mins away by subway from Seoul city center. One of the mountains of Bukhansan national park who did a great job making the trail hikers friendly with rest and toilet stops along the way. Many shops selling hiking gears and eating places near trailhead. Met many young and not so young friendly Koreans along the way.

I have walked Dobongsan before but It was my first time walking the Y Valley route. What can I say about this route. First off there is a notice at the start warning you not to walk it and to use the detour route around the twin peaks of the Y Valley. Word of warning, if you are in the slightest doubt about doing this route then don't. At times you are clinging on to steel ropes with shear drops and one mistake just maybe the last one you'll make. But if your happy with that your in for a treat.
Fact and figures I'm a 73 year old Englishman on an extended holiday in Seoul, and I do class myself as a bit of a hill, mountain walker.
Start point Uijeongbu City Hall Ueijongbu Line, from here just walk uphill, you are heading towards Jaunbong. Near the top is the path leading to Y Valley. Start time 8-30 down in Dodongsan by 1pm and time for a couple of beers before heading home.

This mountain had good course to top with interesting way. From start, the first 1/3 was easy, and the middle course of 1/3 was medium level, and the last 1/3 was hard. So there could enjoy various course in one mountain. There was one of good mountain in S.Korea, and had good view on the top. The "Sinsundae" on the top was amazing and beautiful. There was a little hard to me with about 4 hours.
