When I was a 9 year old kid, I was in Catholic school, I learn that baby Jesus and family hide from King Herodes in this cavern.
On my visit to Egypt I was surprised that I was in this place without planning, it was a very special moment.

I am not a religious person myself but if you want to enjoy a place different to those related to the ancient Egyptian culture while visiting Cairo, this is a place you must visit. It contains a lot of religious symbolism and history. In this church, you can go underground and quickly walk through the place that according to historians, Jesus, Virgin Mary and Joseph lived after they exiled from Jerusalem when Jesus was just a baby. Here you can also see a column with blood stains after a miracle occurred during Eastern Week. So, book a tour to get the most out of it. It is a nice experience.

Beautiful church built on a historical place. A must see when in Cairo. The whole Coptic neighbourhood is beautiful but Abu Serga is awesome indeed.

This church is full of stories and meanings, it is said that the holy family stayed there when they fled to Egypt fearing King Herod. On the site was built a church, q is always crowded with visitors because it is a place close to the central market.

The Cavern Church is also known as Abu Serga Church. Inside the church is the cavern where the holy family stayed for three months. Do visit this historic church.

This was probably the most memorable of our visits in Coptic Cairo with Memphis Tours (private tour with guide). Named after two Roman Syrian martyrs it originally dates from about the 4th century AD but has been rebuilt many times. It is said to be built over the cave where Joseph, Mary and Jesus are said to have taken shelter from Herod. It also contains the glass covered well from which the Holy Family is supposed to have drank from.
The tall brick church with central column supports has some relics on the southern side and you can visit the barrel-roofed church and then the columned crypt underneath. There is a map of the Holy Family's journey in Egypt. It is near the Hanging Church and was actually quite crowded with tourists when we visited on a Saturday morning.

The Church of Saint Sergius or Abu Serga was built in the center of the ancient Roman fort of Babylon in Coptic Cairo.
It is a very warm church, with bricks and a wooden roof in the shape of a ship (Noah's ark??).
One of the most important parts of this church is the cave where the Holy Family stayed during their trip to Egypt. It has a nave and 2 corridors and the ceiling is vaulted. At the end of the south hallway of the Cave, there is a baptistery.
In the area there are images and maps showing the itinerary carried out by the Sagrada Familia.

Close to the Hanging Church so super easy to stop in. Supposedly the Holy Family stayed in a cave underneath and also drank from the well.

St. George's Church is a Greek Orthodox church located in Coptic Cairo. If you're strolling through the neighborhood, it's worth checking out.

The church had been recently and impressively restored. Dedicated to two fourth-century martyrs (both Roman soldiers and possible lovers), the building rests on the site of the cavern where the Holy Family presumably sought refuge in Cairo during their flight from Herod's wrath. We enjoyed our visit here as part of our Cairo tour with Memphis Tours. This church, we think, is more interesting than the Hanging Church.

No Cairo, não se recomenda beber água que não seja engarrafada. O lugar é místico, na Igreja de São Jorge, lembre-se de colocar no seu pescoço o grilhão que existe pendurado em uma parede interna, é uma experiência a ser vivida. Boa viagem.

l entered with a local government group so it was free. if you are there, and esp if you know the story from bible, this place is worth your time
