On of the most amazing site in Cairo because of the location and it's spiritual and historical importance.

The way to the Place is very Sketchy and unpleasant, getting cabs back is an issue, Pleace is good for views and pictures.

A great attraction in Cairo that many do not even realise exists.
One has to travel through Garbage City where a mostly Christian community sorts and recycles garbage. This can be unsettling to some, but we found this community’s faithfulness inspiring as their churches in two caves are phenomenal and even being extended as they became too small to host the services.
It takes around 25 minutes to get there from the Citadel, but highly recommended.

This is an Orthodox Christian church carved into the rock. It is used mainly (but not only) by the inhabitants of Cidade do Lixo as a place of worship. The space is also (occasionally) used for concerts and performances.
But in this complex (Mosteiro de São Simão) there are 2 more churches, also carved into the rock. Hence the English term "Church in the rock").
It is very interesting indeed and the visit would be 5 stars if, to reach this place, we didn't have to cross the city of garbage. A city where rubbish collectors are concentrated and therefore, where much of Cairo's rubbish is piled up.
A very important tip: If you decide to visit (which I advise), don't let the Uber/taxi flights go away. Agree on a price for the wait and subsequent return. Why? Firstly, there is little mobile network to use when requesting transport and secondly, it is difficult to find drivers who agree to pick up customers in this location. During the entire trip, keep the car windows closed.

This is the Cave Church (St Simon the Tanner Monastery) in the Manshiet Nasser district (an area mainly for people involved in the waste disposal industry).
Located on the eastern outskirts of Cairo, it is a church of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which is said to be the "primitive Christianity" of Egypt.
When I actually went there, I was overwhelmed by the Cave Church, which was built in a fairly large natural cave. It can apparently accommodate several thousand believers.
I was overwhelmed by the high ceiling, the murals painted on the natural rock face, and the beautiful frescoes.
On the other hand, it made me think about the Manshiet Nasser district (an area mainly for people involved in the waste disposal industry) and Coptic Christianity.
The Manshiet Nasser district is a so-called slum area, and most of the people there are "Copts (primitive Christians), Coptic Christians," whose livelihood is collecting and recycling waste. When you actually enter this area, there is a strange smell in the air, and there are mountains of garbage all over the city.
I wondered why "Coptic Christians" gather in this city of garbage.
It seems that after the 7th century, Muslims became the majority in Egypt, and the Copts (primitive Christians) who had existed before that were driven out, but I don't know if this area is part of that history. However, it is true that Copts gather in this area. I don't know the answer, but it was very interesting and made me think.
If you're interested, why not visit the Cave Church (St Simon the Tanner Monastery)? I recommend it.
By the way, prices in this area were cheaper than in Cairo.

This was my most memorable experience on this trip. I’ve been to Cairo once before e so had already seen the pyramids but this is such a special place. You drive through ‘garbage city’ to get there - so called because that’s what the people do and live off. Tremendously poor and Christian. They have built these churches into the caves and it’s a spectacular place. Not just one church but I counted 5 and went into 4. The biggest one is a cathedral. There’s also a shrine to the man that was their priest for many years.
There are carvings in the rock face and it’s wonderful. There’s no charge and I didn’t see a donation box either and would love to donate.
We took a taxi to get there and he waited. Not sure how you’d get there otherwise.

So excited to see this after reading about it. We drove through the Garbage District to get there. There are actually 2 churches: a larger and smaller one. Both were great. Detailed carvings in each one and the relics of St Simon.

You would never expect to see such a large and unusual church in a Muslim country. It is ncredible to see how the 2 churches are carved into the side of the mountain. Go and see it.

Not a great place, completely dispensable during a visit to Cairo. To get to the place we passed through the city of garbage, the place where most rubbish is recycled in Cairo, a horrible and ugly smell. On the way back, it was difficult to get an Uber. Beautiful church but nothing special

A unique and beautiful place, there are actually 3 churches in this place. I loved the cave church, It's breathtaking. However, It's not easy to reach as it lies in a very poor neighborhood. I highly recommend not taking any photos on your way to the church, as this won't be well tolerated by the residents. Also, if you can go there with someone local it'd be much safer. At the end, the place is worth visiting and the church itself is very safe.
