A intermediate level of hiking trail , the view along the wall is nice , although sometimes there is no shading area and feeling boiling hot

For those interested in doing a big of hiking in the north of Lantau Island, the Ngong Ping (Rescue) Trail is a good way to trek between Tung Chung and the Ngong Ping 360 Village. The trail is around 5.7 km and provides a lot of climbing, exercise and rewards hikers with excellent views of Tung Chung, the Hong Kong International Airport, Lantau Island countryside and peaks, the HK-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB), 360 cable car and Giant Buddha at the Ngong Ping 360 Village.
If approaching from the Tung Chung MTR Station, simply use All Trails or HK Hiking Trails mobile app to make your way to the trailhead west of the historic Hau Wong Temple. From there you face a long and steep initial climb before things level off with a repeating ascend and descend through the hills until you reach the village. The hike take around 2-3 hours depending on your speed and how many stops you take for rest break or to take photos.
Alternatively, you can hike in the opposite direction, taking the cable car or bus up to the Ngong Ping 360 Village and hiking back down to Tung Chung. You will still make quite a few ascends through the series of hills and lesser peaks. As such, it is an easier hike this direction but you will still get plenty of exercise.
A particular stretch of the Rescue Trail that we like is the series of wooden plank walkways that cascade through denser forest in the middle of the trail. This is a neat section that is also photogenic and provides good views of the airport. It can be fun to watch airplanes take off and land from near this location as well.
Allow 3+ hours for the hike either direction and potentially more time if you want to take in some of the Relics of Tung Chung that are found along and near the path between the MTR Station and trailhead. Allow another 1-2 hours at the Ngong Ping Village if you want to explore that area, taking in visits to the Po Lin Monastery, Big Buddha and perhaps the Wisdom Trail located there.

The Ngong Ping Trail (further called Ngong Ping Rescue Trail) is a scenic hike that is 5.7 kilometre long linking the town centre of Tung Chung and the Ngong Ping Village. Much of the trail follows the route of the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, passing through forested areas of the Lantau North Country
Hikers will be afforded really good views of the Hong Kong International Airport, The South China Sea, HZMB bridge - Hong Kong side and the Big Buddha statue, especially when sky conditions are favourable.
In terms of difficulty, the trail is a constant circuit of ascending and descending steps up and down hilly landscape. The trail is nicely paved and steps and wooden boards and cases are in very good condition. Note that some climbs seem like endless steps. Be ready to take a few breaks to rest if necessary.
Note that much of the trail offers little shade so do bring a hat and apply adequate sunscreen if its sunny outside. Best to have good footwear and plenty of water for the hike as well. The trail is estimated to take 4+ hours if you allow time for stop breaks, photographs. Fast hikers making minimal stops may be able to finish much quicker in 2.5 hours.
In the end, the Ngong Ping Trail is scenic & challenging. It is a good opportunity to spend a half day in the outdoors, getting some exercise on Lantau Island.
