Speciality museum in the Wan Chai Gap area near the Peak
The Hong Kong Police Museum is located on Coombe Road in the Wan Chai Gap area of the Peak. This is a focused speciality museum, which suitably makes use of the old Wan Chai Gap Police Station. Opening hours are 9am to 5pm (Tues to Sun), the museum is closed on Mondays. Entrance is free to the public.

Not the easiest museum to access but an interesting place to spend half an hour if you have hiked to this location by way of the Wan Chai Gap (Green Trail) from the north or up the Aberdeen Country Park trails from the south.

What you will find are 5 exhibition galleries with over 1200 items and photographs on display. The museum is curated pretty well, display items are a nice range and include English text for explanation. The galleries cover the storied history of the Hong Kong Police Force well and provide a good half an hour of learning opportunity for those with interest.

museum's subject matter is fascinating & spectacular location on Peak
This is a small, old-fashioned (little, if any, interactive materials for visitors), and highly interesting museum about the history of Hong Kong's police. The museum is free, which is a nice change for Hong Kong and, also, a partial explanation of why no technology has been employed to spice up the institution. After all, Hong Kong is known as a really high-tech destination.

The museum is perched up on the Peak, in the location of a previous police station. There are lots of displays of the Hong Kong police during British colonial times.
They do not allow taking pictures inside the museum (I'm not sure why they have this restriction). It seemed to me that there was, unfortunately, not really anyone to ask questions to as you looked around.

I visited the museum on the suggestion of a local, as I had expressed my fascination with Hong Kong's history. Growing up in the U.S., I had no idea that part of the famed "British empire" that ruled the seas for hundreds of years was actively involved in bringing opium from east India to China (often through the port of Hong Kong). The current political ballyhoo (e.g., protests against the government) has some of its historical roots in the British supplying of opium to China. This museum has a room dedicated to a crude morphine laboratory. Other rooms have displays of drug use paraphernalia.

I took a taxi to get to the museum. I was anxious, being my first time in Hong Kong, that I would not be able to find transportation to my hotel after I left the museum.. I feared waiting out on a small road up on the Peak. The lady at the museum's reception told me to walk the relatively short distance to the main road, and then I would find both public transportation and taxis. To my relief, she was correct, and I easily found a taxi.

This is not a glamorous Hong Kong destination, such as the Peninsula Hotel or Disneyland, but it is a fascinating place nonetheless well worth the visit.

Could offer so much more

For a start, it’s divided into Halls, A,B,C etc, well that tells me nothing, why wouldnt they say, instead of Hall D, its the prison cells!!!! Makes more sense to me.

Also very disappointing in displays, i expected stores on escapes, how they did it, etc
Punishment, i didnt see a thing on this
What type of crimes did the inmates commit, list the top 20 with descriptions. Maybe i’m Into gore, (i dont think so) but why wouldnt you go into this detail. Absolutely nothing. (Unless of course it was in Hall Z in which case i dint see it and it highlights my previous point.
Architecture is good and worth seeing. A bit of history on WW2 but not much, no photos for eg.
But it is free

An interesting museum in a lovely setting, full of fascinating artefacts all housed in a beautiful colonial-era building. Worth a visit, we took it in during a hike from Aberdeen to Wanchai..

This combination of buildings housed the former police station and magistrate from the period of British colonial rule. Also the former barracks are available to visit.

Lots of stuff to see crammed into this little building
We were only aware of this small museum whilst flicking through the rough guide book for something to do whilst we were in Kennedy town. What a little gem to find! All of it was interesting, especially as they had lots of old photos on display.

There was displays on how heroin was made illegally and some items which were used to smuggle drugs around.

various badges, various uniforms, medals etc were also on display.

Bring your own food and water as they don’t sell any at the museum. There only sell commemorative books and the odd ‘old era’ police related postcards.

There is a sign which states if large groups arrive, they have right to be let into the museum first before any other visitors, merely due to the size of the venue.

Hidden gem and along the way to Peak
Museum is comprehensive with good exhibits on police uniforms, motorbikes, the auxillary police. Spent about 45 minutes in there. No phototaking allowed.

We took bus # 6 from Admiralty MTR to reach the Museum. After the museum, we took the same bus to get to the Peak.
A good way to avoid the crowd at the Tram station and enjoy the scenic view of HK.
