Magical... simply magical! The cottage is perfect - it was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. You are literally a 3 minute walk from the albatross and a 30 minute walk from the Rockhoppers. We climbed mountains, swam at one of the two beaches close to the cottage and spent hours with the albatross and their chicks. The scenery is simply stunning!! We also visited Port Egmont (the first British settlement) and the owners were kind enough to take us across to Keppel Island to visit Cranmer Station. So, if history and wildlife is your thing then Saunders is the place for you.

My wife, daughter and I have just returned from staying at the Rookery and a night at the settlement. We live in the Falklands and appreciate that many camp houses or places in remote locations do not have 24 hour power (this is often taken for granted by most people). The cottage was great, 24 hour electrical power was my first great surprise. The proximity to the wildlife was another, the Rockhopper colony us a mere 30 minutes walk during which we could take in the gracefull Blackbrowed Albatrosses. The Rockhopper shower provides excellent photos, half a meter above are nesting Albatross with King Cormorants all around. Gently Penguins are 30 mins the otherway with a great each on the way.we swam with Commerson Dolphins and Magallenic Penguins. Staying at the Rookery for a few days was great as we could take in the sunrise and sunsets and capture same photos with different light. The whole family have fallen in love with Saunders Island with our teenage daughter saying she wished we were staying longer. The hosts David and Susan were exceptional and put us up in the settlement when fog grounded the Islander aircraft (to our delight). Truely wonderful to leave the I ternet and mobile phones on the back burner and experience genuine peace for a few days.

We will be comming back.

We stopped here as part of an expedition/cruise of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands. Within moments of our zodiac landing we stood on a small rise with simultaneous views of 4 types of penguins (king, gentoo, rockhopper and magellanic). You can get reasonably close (but not too close to them). In particular it is fun to watch the rockhoppers move around. The island also had amazing birdlife (the flying kind).

The Neck is my favourite Place at the Sauders Island. The Neck cottage was an amazing and comfotable experience.
The Neck is a superb Wildlife location.

The wildlife was amazing and plentiful. Both the rookery and the neck were not to be missed. Anthony was amazing and helpful in all aspects of my stay there. I only gave it a two star rating because the House I stayed at in the settlement was a level of filth I have not encountered in all my travels across six continents. I literally was able to write my name in the dust on the carpet and the constant flow of bugs crawling up out of the carpet and around your feet on the toilet were a bit distressing. The flying bugs in the bedroom just added to it. Not to mention the bugs and dirt in the kitchen. I would have preferred camping over staying in this house. Even if something is basic it can be cleaned. This was not clean. I believe the accommodations at the neck and rookery are better. Do not stay at the settlement. I would only stay at the rookery or neck in the future. It was a shame because the wildlife was amazing to see and my sleeping space put a huge damper on the experience.

Staying at the Rookery cottage is an amazing experience and one of my favourite places in the Faklands. It is situated close to the cliffs and sweeping shoreline, a stone’s throw from nesting Black Browed Albatross and a short walk to one of the most beautiful Rock Hopper Penguin colonies in the Falklands.

The colony is simply overwhelming. Scattered along the cliffs and between nesting Cormorants, Albatross and other seabirds is a large colony of Rock hopper penguins high up on the hill side. Every day here is special, as you experience the sights and sounds of all the wildlife it is truly a privilege.

My favourite activity is to walk down the gully to the Rockhopper shower where returning Rockhopper penguins, that have been foraging for food to feed their chicks, stop and take a moment to have a fresh water shower before they make their way up the steep gully back to their colonies. Its quite a performance as they wash and preen their feathers, and there is often a line of penguins waiting their turn. If one penguin is taking too long, the others in line make a bit of a racket and prompt the others with a gentle peck of the beak to move on and give someone else a go. It is truly a fascinating sight and some interesting social behavior that dictates the shower etiquette. I sit here for hours watching these antics.

David and Suzan are the owners of this amazing place and always make me feel so welcome each time I visit. the cottage is a great spot, self contained and private and if you stay at the other end of the island at the Neck this is a great location that accommodates a small group and is located right in the middle of all the wildlife activity. a visit to Saunders is truly an amazing experience. I am addicted and keep coming back each year.

Stayed here for two nights in the settlement. We enjoyed staying on the farm and the accomodation, whilst basic, was very comfortable. The family were very willing to drive us around and we went to both the Rookery and the Neck. The penguins, the albatross, the cormorants, the dolphins, the seals were amazing and watching baby penguins hatch was amazing.

Easily the most picturesque of all the islands and places in Falklands that you can commercially go to, Saunders is located on the western side of the island group. There are no human settlements on the island and no permanent structure either but this is a hotbed for wildlife especially penguins. You can see three varieties in abundance here namely the Magellanic, King and Rockhoppers. To access this island you need to be either a part of a cruise tour or you may charter your own vessel from Stanley. Apart from the obvious wildlife the island itself is superbly picturesque and there is gentle sloping hike unto to huge rockhopper and albatross rookeries which also offers breathtaking panoramas of the island. Sometimes if you are really lucky you may spot a pod of dolphins swimming about near the beach or orcas. Don't miss the Land Rover which doubles up as the souvenir shop on the island. Options aren't plenty and it is horribly overpriced but you always get to brag that you bought something from the back of a Land Rover in one of the most remote islands on the planet. When on the island be careful of the animals and know that they will always have the right of way. They are pretty much used to humans and with a good camera and binoculars you can experience them here like very few can. Remember to dress in layers since the island can get quite windy and be c careful with your camera gear near the beach as sand blasts are common.

I spent two nights on Saunders Island on the Settlement. The Pole-Evans family were terrific hosts and I was able to visit both the Rookery and the Neck during my stay. I also trekked out to the original settlement and would encourage other history nerds to do the same.

That all being said, this place is self-catering and the hosts are welcoming you into their home, not a hotel. The accommodations are basic but manageable for a night or two. There was a bit too much dust and dead flies for my taste, but it served its purpose (and you can do anything for two days).

We landed on Saunders Island from our expedition cruise. We walked along both sides of The Neck. There were lots of birds - caracaras, oystercatchers, and 4 different species of penguins - kings, gentoos, magellanic and rockhoppers. We spent ages watching the penguins negotiate the rocks! We had a very enjoyable couple of hours ashore.
