This elevator is permanently out of service. The friendly guy at the tourist office explained that it was difficult to keep in working order since it was so old. Those wanting to go to the Paseo 21 de Mayo will have to walk up the hill via the stairs or take taxi.

A faire .

Like most ascensores in this town, the little car is rather shaky and one better doesn´t think too much about health and safety while riding it. During the trip you see one of the most photographed houses of Valparaiso, a blue one that clings to the rocks. Once up, there is a nice mirador of viewpoint, with even some stalls selling souvenirs. The view is supposed to be one of the best, and the view is indeed largely unimpeded. On the other hand, it is mostly of the harbour of Valparaiso, the largest in the country with containers and military part. Still, worth the walk to get here (several burned down buildings), just for the experience to ride in one of the ascensores in the town.

This Ascensor is at the far end of Valparaiso it's a larger ascensor than some and goes up to the large military museum. A pleasant walk around the top. Goes without saying that there are good views

It is convenient to get to the top of the hill from the base at a very reasonable price in a short time. Certainly worth it.

Mi relato en ingles: Unfortunally, my experience in Valparaiso was very bad. My brother is living in Santiago de Chile and we decided to go to Valparaiso by ourselves. We took the Ascensor Artillería at 10:30 a.m. From there we went to the Naval and maritime museum.
Our mistake was decided to go by walk to the others turistic places.
so we started to walk and then after 15-20 minutes we were robbed violently.
2 men started to run in our direction, the biggest who was also the leader tried to take my bag and snatch my bag. I was stronger than him. So He threw me on the floor, I was immobilized with a foot and he pulled out a switchblade knife. I saw the knife close to my belly and I was ready to receive the knife. I closed my eyes and I got peed on. My brother was with the other guy who was short and thin and asked for the money/la Plata to a meter away. My brother gave the wallet with 200.000 chilean pesos and all documents and credit card. He was able to hide the I-phone 6 (the price is around 800 Eur). he didn´t tried to help me. My brother told me to stop to tighten the purse/the bag. I did it and the man took my bag which contain the samsung S3, sony zt3 waterproof, a small canon camera (value around 60 Eur) and 110.000 chilean pesos. We were on a Cerro/Hill very close to a square with a checkpoint police (carabinieros). we made the complaint of theft which took a lot of time. The police was very very lazy. Then we went to the police office by car to finish to declair. We lost all the money and we asked to the police some money to return to santiago. They gave the money and we made the transfer the following day. The police told us that Valpairaiso is getting the most dangerous city of Chile. The tourists has to go there with a Tour or if they walk alone, the have to go only in the most touristic places. Sometimes the Lanzas/thieves start to follow the tourist and await the opportunity to rob. It a pity that this beautiful city is so unsafe. The police told us that some people who comes to Valparaiso to give the recognition as a UNESCO heritage of humanity were also robbed. Be careful.
