Thank you for your patience in my reply. I didn't see your question until now as I'm rarely out on tripadviser, but from what I understand you need to have a tour guide. However, I am not 100% certain about this, but the groups we saw did have one. I know our guide had to show some paperwork that he had brought with him in the town before we headed up the mountain, that I would have never known to get. Another concern is that the trail getting to Humantay would also be very hard to find on your own because it began on what looked to be private property, so I think tour guides pay the families who own the land some money to cut through their land in order to be able to use it. Also renting a car in Peru is EXPENSIVE, (over $100 a day), and there were several road closures we would have had no idea about, but our tour guide was familiar with saving us oodles of time waiting (sometimes you have to wait for 4-6 hours for certain roads to be open). If a tour is too expensive, one tip is to barter it down. Bartering is a huge part of Peruvian culture and you can even barter at restaurants as usually they have a tourist and local price and will meet you in the middle. In short, we just felt better/safer using a tour guide even though normally we are big do it yourselfers. Good luck! No matter what you decide to do, visiting Peru is an adventure and flexibility with pans a must! :)

I believe your doctor will give you the best advices because I don’t have idea if the high altitude is good or not during the pregnancy.

Serenjdip... You are younger than I am, but I'm in very good shape (being a Wilderness mule packer here in the states) and I could not have done Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake on following days. Rainbow Mountain is HARD, even though not long and even with riding a horse for the first portion going up. It's the 17,000' elevation that does you in. I did one day between the two which I'd strongly recommend if you possibly can.

The youngest kid I saw on the trek was a 13 year old girl. If you want to take your children you may be able to place them on a horse. They have plenty of horses at the beginning of the trek and they are affordable. The horses know the route very well and I felt safe on the horse when I went to Humantay. This may be a little better for the kiddos. Since it is a long hike and very high altitude.
