We visited a number of stores in Cusco to find the texture we wanted. The Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco was the best place to purchase high quality shawls, scarfs and textile products. The center serves as a clearinghouse for local textile makers and returns 70% of the profit to the artists. Each item you purchase comes with a certificate of authenticity and details on the artist. You can be guaranteed that the product you are purchasing is made of baby alpaca wool and not a fake substitute. While you might pay less at one of the other stores, the premium, if any, is worth the guarantee on quality and feeling that you are supporting local merchants.

Interesting place, where they explain to you how is the process of dyeing wool with natural pickets; like plants, flowers, volcanic stones, and minerals like salt as a catalyst, also the spinning and weaving process.

De casualidad luego de salir del Templo Qoricancha nos encontramos con el Centro donde nos dieron clases magistrales de tejido y las preparaciones previas de la lana. Julio de 2015.

So many textile vendors sell the same items, and claim they are their own work. At this shop, you will see artisanal pieces made by villagers. Best of all, 90% of proceeds go back to the families that make them. Buy some lovely things here!

The displays in the museum were interesting and the signs (in Spanish and English) were very informative about the traditional uses of the textile items and about the techniques used to make them.

On one of off days from excursions, we spent the day shopping in the San Pedro Market where you can find lots of great deals on normal touristy gifts. But we always looking for something unique to each city that represents the local arts and crafts. We had been walking down Avenida Sol looking a many shops but were seeing the same crafts. Out hotel had given us a map of the city with some specialty shops and as we walked down Ave Sol we came across Centro de Textiles. The sign on the door said cerrado (closed) and we quickly were disappointed. We thought we saw some movement from inside, we looked again to see if the we read the sign correctly, but we had. It did seemed a little dark but my wife tried the door and it opened. We saw some staff and asked if they were open; they were. We walked in and saw some beautiful textiles, but what caught our eyes was in the front a section of textiles reduced some 40% - that made us look. In the back we saw 3 native artisians weaving. I went back to look and did not really pay attention to the older male weaver but looked at the two female weavers. The detailed work from the 2 ladies did not seem as intricate as the items on the discounted section. We were considering purchasing on of the discounted textiles as the ladies on the counter told us that each textile were handmade from a local artist with their name and region attached to the items. Fate like I said caused me to go back and look at the weavers. Then I caught the male artist and noticed the detail of his work was more intricate than the 2 ladies. I do not speak spanish, but my wife does. Through her I was asking him question like: did he make any items that were for sale in the store? He said yes, there were some hanging on the wall. We asked how long it took him to make each item? He said about 25 days. We watched and were amazed at how he crafted the textiles. We went back to the ladies working the store and asked which pieces this artist had done. They showed us 3 pieces, two which were exquisite and one that was good but not our taste. The price was high, so we asked the ladies if this artist had done any of the items that were in the discounted section, but told that know the was not. We looked at the two pieces that we loved and I told my wife to lets break down and get one. She agreed and we picked one we both liked. Still kind of pricey so we did ask the ladies if they could give us a small discount as this was outside of what we normally spend on art work. This is not a place that you would normally negotiate, but the ladies gave it some thought and knew we loved the work and had appreciated the artist that made this piece, so they gave us a small discount ( thanks). Before I bought the item, I took it over to the artist and had my wife ask him if he made this? He said yes. You could see the pride in his eyes that we appreciated and valued his work. We paid for the item and went over to the artist and I had my wife ask him if he would take a picture with us with what we bought. He said yes and one of the sales ladies took a few pictures with him. The item we bought had his tag on it with his name and picture. This made our trip and this piece of art will be treasured for years and will be hung proudly in our home. Before we left, we also gave a tip to the man and the two lady weavers. This was fate.

This was a wonderful experience watching the Andean master weavers demonstrate their trade. It was interesting learning how they dye of their wool and how this trade has been passed down for hundreds of years. Blankets, scarves, handbags, table runners, etc., in beautiful vibrant colors.
