Normally we would have to be on the small boat by 4 AM to travel on the river for over two extra hours out of Ceiba Tops Lodge in reaching our next adventure point = The Canopy Tour. --- but --- Orlando made arrangement for us to get off the boat in the Town of Indiana (town named after a group of US missionaries from the state of Indiana many years ago) no more than about two miles back down the river. This town has about 6,000 resident, and “for those divers that have been to Truk”, Indiana is a very similar environment except the streets are concrete paved and there are even concrete sidewalks.
We walked through the market, and like we have seen in China and Thailand, there is all forms of local food, but being cut up on ancient wooden planks and NO ice (refrigeration).
We then all boarded motorcycle Tuck Tucks across the land area (about 5 miles),where we again pick up another boat for a 30 minute ride to the Exploration lodge where we had breakfast (back to wood floors as a comparison),= thus bypassing the long winding river mender of the Napo River.
Looking at the river it is very evident how it slowly PLOWS the land at every turn on one side and deposits earth on the other side, thus over the centuries forever renewing (turning over) the land / life.
We then took another boat up a very narrow tributary to the Amazon Conservatory Study Area (ACSA) = The last lodge in this grouping of 4.
If you come here in September (Dry Season) you most like cannot reach this Canopy walk tour because the water is too low for the boats to reach this tour point.
The ACSA was developed back in 1991for scientist to study the tops of the rain forest. The elevated walkway was completed in 1993 and opened to the public for eco tours in 1995.
Here at the canopy tour, we experienced something neat and unusual (nothing of like since Tom and Pete (diver friend) had experienced something similar in Australia; in the tropical mainland area of Cairns ---- but that was in an enclosed gondola ride.
We ascend into the giant trees of the Rain Forest Canopy (via a suspended walkway), and a very impressive system of aerial platforms and cableways more than 1,500 feet long. They say this is the longest treetop walkway in the world. Fortunately for us there was no rain!
From our prospective we were able to observe a most interesting complex layer of canopy vegetation that thrives 120 feet above the ground.
During our walk we spotted more birds (that made the bird watchers day).
The view over the TOP of the trees with all the flowers was the most impressive.
Tom is not a fan of heights, but the construction and layout of this walkway made it a breeze to endure (as long as Tom did not look over the side of the walkway enclosure net straight down towards the jungle floor. In reality with so much vegetation just below us there was no drastic “oh my-gosh” feeling of being up so high. Orlando noted that in all the 24 years of being open to the public, there have not been any “structural events” resulting in injury! They do maintenance on the walkways on a routine basis.
As we got off the elevated areas it started to mildly rain, but by the time the drops fell off the leaves we were almost back to the lecture building. Now this area where the scientist stay can be a truly a “mud boots on the ground” rather primitive accommodations for westerners (just a place to sleep).
It was back on the boat where we returned to Xplarma lodge where we had another great Amazon resort lunch.

Climb safely and gently and you will eventually be above the trees! Bromeliads, insects, birds, etc. It is spectacular! During low water, you will need a walk a bit, so wear appropriate clothes and use bug spray. If the water is high you might be able to take a boat nearby.

Inolvidabel!

This is a neat experience. Get up above and into the jungle canopy. You'll be over 100 ft in the air walking on over a dozen suspension bridges. Gotta walk about an hour to get there.

The canopy walkway is the longest in the world stretching to 13 different platforms throughout the jungle. You will see the different layers of the jungle. The walk to
get to the canopy is challenging since the wooded pieces place to keep you out of the mud can be quite slippery. You can twist an ankle if you are not careful. It would
be nice if they could provide a better path to the canopy but, overall it was great.
I definitely sweat off my breakfast and lunch. A good idea would be to replenish your electrolites.

It is a rather strenuous mile walk from the river to the 1st platform, especially in a misty rain.
The problem we had were a group of about 15 that their tour director had let go on their own. We saw no monkeys or any other living thing due to their acting like they were on a kids playground. Our guide was finally able to tell the eldest in the group their conduct was why they were not seeing animals which helped.
The walkways are safe but If you have a fear of heights don't go & ruin someone else's experience.
This was the next to last day of our tour and I'm glad this was the experience that was the final event.
Ricardo was our local guide and was very good.

Outstanding views of the surrounding canopy of trees. A marvel of construction that took two years. The walkway does swing as you walk. But rope netting and guides prevent any real problems. Not an easy trip, but well worth it!

After a bit of a hike through the rain forest, you come to a well constructed series of towers and bridges that lead you to a walkway over the canopy of the rain forest. It seemed safe enough but probably not the best choice if you have a fear of heights.

Buenas noches, tengo dos dudas, se puede hacer un full day y de ser así cuando costaría para dos personas?

Hi Karen, we're staying on another lodge. Can you go directly from Iquitos to Canopy Walkway or do you have to stay on another site over night?
Thanks for your answer

Hello! We would like to visit the Canopy Walkway on a day trip from Iquitos. If this possible? Are there tours that allow you to access just the Canopy Walkway? Thank you!

We are taking a cruise down the Amazon and starting and finishing at Iquitos and want to know if the Canopy walk can be done as a day trip.
Thanks

I have the opportunity to either do the canopy walkway or go to monkey island while I stay at Ceiba Tops Lodge. Anyone done both and can give me direction about which experience is most memorable?
