If you are 8 years old, or 8 years old at heart, this is a museum you simply must visit. For some reason this isn't on the usual tourist list in Lima. The fort, Fortaleza Real Filipe, is, but this, and the Naval Museum across the road aren't.
Once you discover it though, you'll be glad you did. This is, or was until 1998, a real working submarine of the Peruvian Navy. When it was decommissioned it became the first floating museum in Latin America.
Entrance is very cheap (10 Soles, 5 for kids as of July 2019) and the guide is very helpful and friendly. Entry to the sub is as real as it gets. Since it's sat in the water (tied to the harbour poles with ropes rather than safety docks and handrails as it would be if this was in Europe or the US) and you enter via the hatch and down the step ladder. Those of a larger standing, may find it a bit tight, but it's worth it.
Once you're in, you'll find out exactly how cramped the conditions on a submarine really are. Not sure I'd be too keen on sleeping right next a huge missile though.
Everything works in this sub, so your kids (and your inner kid) can raise periscopes, pull levers and twist dials as much as you like, and when the guide turns the infrared lighting on to simulate a dive scenario it makes every 8 year olds dreams come true.
If you love anything naval, or just want to pretend to invade Chile, this museum is a must.

Visited alongside a visit to the Real Filipi fort and made for a cheap distraction. Well worth a visit although English for the exhibits is limited but the photographs tell their own story and although I speak little Spanish you can pick the bones out. A mixture of history old and new houses in a most pleasant building. Recommended

I love naval history, and try to visit naval museums wherever I find myself. I had been fortunate enough to visit the Museo Naval in Valparaíso, Chile, as well as the museum ship Huascar in Talcahuano, and thought it would be interesting to see the Peruvian take on the naval battles of the War of the Pacific. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The museum has some nice ship models and some decent artwork, but is otherwise short on history. There are practically no maps and virtually no interpretation. I would have expected large maps of both the battles of Iquique and Angamos, as well as some background on the war itself, not to mention Peru's other naval adventures. I would have imagined spending an hour or more in a naval museum, but ended up being there only about fifteen minutes. However, at 3 soles (under a dollar) the price was right.
