Worth a photo stop. Tombs are empty - apparently raided during the Japanese occupation. No one knows where the contents are located.

One of the famed Three Kingdoms of Korea, the Koguryo dynasty lasted roughly from the 4th Century BC to the 7th Century AD. One of the few cultural vestiges of the era are thousands of tombs built of stone and covered by stone or earthen mounds. Scattered about the countryside in North Korea and China, about 90 of these have wall paintings that are the only visual document we have of the daily life of the people. I visited two of these tombs at the mid-point of my time in the DPRK. Of note, they are difficult to access and a vehicle (with the requisite guides) is mandatory. As the vaults are rarely visited, pre-registry with your tour company is a must as they aren’t staffed regularly with overseers. The experience for both of the crypts was fairly similar; we were met at the entrance by a guide, taken through dark tunnels by aid of a flashlight, and shown wall paintings in various rooms. The paintings displayed a wide variety of subjects, from daily life (hunting, harvesting) to funerary rites to mystical animals. Our guide offered explanations of not only the pictures but of the technique used to make them. We spent about 30 minutes at each site before departing.
Accepting the fact that the tombs are an indispensable record of a bygone era and invaluable not only for Korean history but world history, there were a few (metaphorical) roadblocks for recommending this to the average tourist. First, they are very remote and difficult to access. Second, they are expensive: 100 Euro per tomb. Lastly, it does take quite a bit of imagination to link what you see on the dark, dampened walls to a vibrant ancient dynasty. In summary, there was a bit of disconnect between the energy, time, and money spent and the return on the overall effort. Recommended for those with a niche interest in this type of thing, others may just want to log on to the UNESCO website and see the pictures for free.

Be sure to ask your guides about the story of how the King selected the tomb's location - it's both tragic and hilarious! The place has a very solemn ambience with some fairly intricate animal statues. Worth a quick visit.

These tombs have been substantially renovated although they are worth seeing. The tomb of King Kongmin in Kaesong on the way to the Demilitarised Zone are in their original state and there is also a museum. Awesome!!

Are there many restrictions on photography at these locations in the North?
