It's a very nice church, even though I couldn't get into it. It immediately stands out with its onion-shaped domes. Great photos can be taken on beautiful days

This small church is located not far from the cathedral. It is in Russian style, the exterior is pleasant and the interior decorated. Free entry.

A church that I really liked especially for the external appearance with its five golden domes which very clearly makes you understand that it is a Russian church. The Russian Church of St. Nicholas is located in the center of Sofia, almost next to the Cathedral. Built between 1907 and 1914 based on a design by a Russian architect. Entrance is free and I honestly managed to take a stolen photo. The interior is darker than the exterior but interesting.

The external appearance attracts you to enter, but then it's a bit of a disappointment. You find yourself in a small church, where access to the central part is prohibited, so you have to remain in a few square meters squeezed among the people. However, it is worth a visit

On the outside it looks beautiful with the golden onion domes, the high green central one and the white plaster that makes everything stand out. Of great scenic impact.

Architecturally, the Russian Church of St. Nicholas is truly beautiful, while the interior is rather poor and disappointing.
Entrance, at least, is free.

I believe that my readers will agree with me that Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Saint in historical churches, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia is one of the most revered saints in Orthodoxy. On my travel routes, I have come across dozens and even hundreds of churches, the thrones of which were consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Pleasant (in total, according to my conservative calculations, there are 8282 such temples or thrones in the world). And one of them is the Russian Church of St. Nicholas of Myra in the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia.
You can easily find it on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard (Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard). In principle, the presence of a Russian church somewhere beyond the “border” is not surprising: after the October Revolution of 1917, hundreds of thousands of our compatriots emigrated from Russia. But even before “Red October”, in some capitals of a number of states there were already Russian “colonies” consisting of diplomats, business people and artists.
And all of them, one way or another, were forced to turn to our Lord Jesus Christ. It was for this category of compatriots that the churches of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad were built (in agreement with local authorities). In Sofia, in addition to members of the diplomatic corps, there were many Russians who arrived in the country in the second half of the 19th century, immediately after its liberation from the Ottoman yoke.
And at the suggestion of one of them, the idea of building a small temple in the Bulgarian capital was born. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral had only just been laid and until the end of construction there was still “no way to finish it with a stick,” but I wanted a temple... Somehow, even with the involvement of representatives of the Russian Imperial House, things got off the ground: on September 2, 1907, the foundation of the church was laid down!!! Moreover, practically in the very center of Sofia - 300 steps from the then main square of the city - Prince Alexander I Square.
The author of the design of the temple in the Moscow-Yaroslavl style of the 16th century was Mikhail Timofeevich Preobrazhensky, a Russian architect, restorer, historian of ancient Russian architecture, academician of architecture, author of projects for Russian churches in a number of countries. The construction was roughly completed by 1911, but the church was consecrated only on November 11, 1914. In terms of its status, the St. Nicholas Church in Sofia was embassy. Although, as I believe, at that time access to it was open to any Russian believer.
If we talk about the architecture of the sacral, then we have before us an excellent example of a religious building, very similar in style to the churches of the Russian Orthodox Church built outside Russia: the Cathedrals of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Vienna and Nice, the Church of the Nativity of Christ and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Florence, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Bucharest - with all the elements of a pretty type, beauty and cuteness of the sacred architecture of Rus'. Here you have a high basement, and a five-domed dome, and “onion” domes, and kokoshniks, and zakomars, and Russian patterns, and tents over the porch, and barrel-shaped roofs, etc. As for the St. Sophia Church: as you can see, its main volume is a pillarless two-light quadrangle.
As far as I can judge, during the construction of the sacral the canons of Russian church building were simultaneously observed and violated. As you remember, in Rus' churches were built along the east-west axis, with the apse with the altar always located in the east. St. Nicholas Church of Sophia, due to its connection to the urban environment, was erected along the north-south axis with a slight deviation to the east/west.
But if you look at the temple from a bird’s eye view (or in Google maps in “satellite” mode), you can clearly see that the cruciformity of the structure is given by the entrances attached to the quadrangle from the north and south (the latter is the front entrance), as well as the entrances adjacent to it to the east and west there are semicircular apses under hemispherical conchs.
True, as far as I know, there is only one altar in the church - in the eastern apse, in honor of St. Nicholas of Myra. I don’t know what is located opposite the altar in an extension of a similar shape. From the south we see a nice porch-porch with a gable roof covered with tiles. The main volume is completed in a non-standard way: five cylindrical drums are placed along the roof field, surrounded by a “chain” of kokoshniks.
At the corners there are relatively thin, “blind” ones, crowned with gilded onion-shaped domes. In the center there is a light mega-drum, completed by a row of kokoshniks with keel-shaped elevations. From the latter, a polygonal tent protrudes into the blue sky of Sofia, also covered with glazed tiles, which carries a small blind drum, topped with a small “onion” head. From the exterior decoration of the sacral, I would strongly recommend admiring the wide frieze made of multi-colored tiles, as well as the carved white stone trim of the window openings.
The Russian Church “St. Nicholas of Mirlikiyski” in Sofia is a sacred place of amazing beauty and grace. Highly recommend!!!

In the heart of what could represent a Russian island in the heart of Sofia with the avenue and monument dedicated to Alexander II, as well as the presence of the Russian embassy in Bulgaria, the church of St. Nicholas represents the centuries-old friendship between the two peoples . Built following the expulsion of the Ottomans and the liberation of Bulgaria on what was once the Saray Mosque, destroyed in 1882, the Russian Church of St. Nicholas (Tsurkva Sveta Nikolai) is the official place of worship of the Russian community in Sofia. The church was designed by the Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhenski and built from 1907 to 1914, the year of its consecration. With its five golden domes and magnificent bells donated by Emperor Nicholas II, today the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only do the exteriors rival the nearby Alexander Nevsky Cathedral for beauty and brightness, but the refined interiors and the presence of iconographic art give cultural depth to the building. Entering the crypt you can notice several faithful intent on writing notes addressed to Archbishop Seraphim. The reason dates back to 1950 when the archbishop, on his deathbed, told his faithful to continue writing to him so that he could still take care of them. Since then, anyone in need of a grace goes to the crypt and leaves a note on the archbishop's tomb.
