Very nice church with beautifully restored facade.
Inside you can see that the church is still in daily use.
Worth a visit!

It is the most prominent church in the old town. On the outside it is beautiful with its oldest dark stone central part and its most modern towers painted white. Inside the altar stands out with marbles of different colors. It's opposite Independence Square. It is a must in the old town and a cool and pleasant place to pray and thank for traveling to such nice places.

Casco Antiguo is a charming historic neighborhood in the city of Panama listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This district dates back to 1673 and features vibrant squares and picturesque brick paved streets surrounded by colorful buildings. A must-see and the Santa Maria la Antigua Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama City, located on the main square. The beginning of its construction is 1688 and its dark stone facade (from the old cathedral, in Panamá Viejo), contrasts with the two white side towers, with the pyramidal arremates covered with nácar. The building is very well preserved and in its interior has a lot of sacred collection.

When entered, firstly I was dazzled with the new looks, clean, pleasant, shining checkered marbles but wait a minute… I remember quite clear that on the floor there were XIX tombstones, where are they?! They are all gone! Although it was almost 3 decades, the last time I was there with a friend for a wedding and we joked about that one of them probably was one of her ancestors… on those days the looks of the cathedral interiors were crying for a restoration, I thought after all this time, they should had made a great job restoring it but it changed and looked new built rather than a restoration of a 300+ century old religious structure.
Still very beautiful from the outside, Colonial style with the blocks of different colors (they were brought from the remains of fired buildings of the first town founded by the Spaniards in the XVI century located at the other side of the city) and I have to say didn’t suffer the heat just because now all churches are air-conditioned; this comfort at a cost and the hurry to have it ready for the Pope’s visit in 2019.
Remodel, renovation but not restoration.

My wife and I squeezed in quite a few points of interest during our very short visit to Panama (three days). While there are many walking tours of the Old Quarter that include Independence Square and The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria the Ancient, we opted to visit this landmark on our own. I would imagine some walking tours may include some history or even a visit inside, but our decision was based on two factors. First, we wanted to ensure we could spend whatever time we felt appropriate exploring the church. Second, we had a cooking class and chocolate making class, both within line-of-sight of this landmark.
Looking at our very packed schedule, it made the most sense to squeeze our visit in between the Miraflores Locks and our Panamanian Cooking class nearby. We left the Miraflores Locks, stopping at Sisu Coffee Studio for a pour-over Geisha coffee before heading to the Cathedral to eplore. With nearly thirty minutes until our cooking class, we were able to explore the church without feeling rushed.
Getting there.
The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria the Ancient is located in Panama City's historic Casco Viejo district. The church stands as a magnificent testament to Panama's rich cultural and religious history. Its story spans centuries, marked by colonial ambition, religious devotion, and architectural evolution.
Early Beginnings: The First Cathedral
The origins of the Metropolitan Cathedral date back to the early 16th century. Panama City was founded on August 15, 1519, by the Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias Dávila. A small chapel was constructed soon after to serve the spiritual needs of the settlers. This initial chapel laid the foundation for what would become the city's religious center.
Destruction and Rebirth: Relocating to Casco Viejo
The original Panama City, now known as Panama Viejo, faced numerous attacks from pirates and privateers, the most infamous being Henry Morgan's sacking in 1671. Following this devastating event, the decision was made to relocate the city to a more defensible location, what is now known as Casco Viejo.
In 1673, the cornerstone for the new cathedral was laid. The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria the Ancient began, symbolizing the rebirth of Panama City. The project was a massive undertaking, involving local laborers and artisans, as well as materials imported from Spain and other parts of the Spanish Empire.
Architectural Splendor: Baroque and Neoclassical Influences
The cathedral's construction spanned over a century, with completion finally achieved in 1796. Its architectural design showcases a blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, reflecting the trends of the periods during which it was built. The façade is particularly striking, with twin bell towers inlaid with mother-of-pearl from the Pearl Islands, giving it a distinctive and shimmering appearance.
Inside, the cathedral boasts a spacious nave and several chapels, adorned with religious artworks and intricate woodwork. The high altar, made of marble, is a focal point, drawing the eyes of worshippers and visitors alike.
Historical Significance: A Symbol of Panama's Identity
Throughout its history, the Metropolitan Cathedral has played a central role in Panama's religious and cultural life. It has witnessed significant historical events, including the declaration of Panama's independence from Spain in 1821 and its separation from Colombia in 1903.
In 1882, Pope Leo XIII elevated the cathedral to the status of a basilica, recognizing its importance and influence. This designation brought further prestige and reinforced its position as a key religious institution in the region.
Modern Times: Restoration and Preservation
In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and restore the Metropolitan Cathedral. The cathedral underwent extensive renovations, which were completed in time for Pope Francis's visit in January 2019, during World Youth Day. The chair he sat on is encased in glass on the left side of the sanctuary. I wasn't able to take a good photo due to the reflection from the glass. The restorations undertaken prior to this visit aimed to preserve the cathedral's historical integrity while ensuring it remains a vibrant place of worship and a major tourist attraction.
Today, the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria the Ancient stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Panama's enduring faith and resilience. It attracts thousands of visitors annually, who come to admire its architectural beauty, delve into its rich history, and experience the spiritual serenity it offers.
Conclusion: A Timeless Landmark
The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria the Ancient is more than just a religious building; it is a living chronicle of Panama's past. From its early beginnings in the shadow of pirate attacks to its current status as a revered historical and religious landmark, the cathedral embodies the spirit and perseverance of the Panamanian people. As it continues to stand the test of time, it remains a beacon of faith, culture, and history for future generations to cherish.
Donations are accepted but not required for this visit. There is a small chapel to the right of the Chancel. There was an opportunity to donate in the chapel, as well as a box collecting for maintenance of the massive and impressive pipe organ located at the rear of the sanctuary.

This is a beautiful Catholic Basilica dating back hundreds of years, and is considered the most important basilica in all of Panama. The church was finished in 1794. The main altar was restored in 2018. The entire altar is basically comprised of full gold. It's magnificent craftsmanship indeed. Take the time to stroll around and see the different sculptures & artwork. And as always, respect the rules of the grounds. They have a donation box towards the entrance of the church, as well as souvenirs. I would give something, just to go towards building maintenance.

It is also called the Cathedral Basilica of Santa María la Antigua because it was originally located in that city. The story is interesting because it suffered several fires until its consecration at the end of the 18th century. It preserves some artistic objects from the original location and state funerals are held here.

Very beautiful from the outside. It's a bit disappointing on the inside. Very large and very modern with air conditioning and many TV screens.
Not as lavish as most cathedrals in Central America.
