A Igreja das Mercês está localizada em Casco Viejo, próximo da Praça da Independência. A fachada é simples, porém bonita e está bem preservada. Tem duas torres sineiras e seu interior guarda várias imagens sacras. Há um museu com acesso gratuito.

An atmospheric church with many interesting details, not least the narrow wooden support columns. One of the can't-miss churches in Casco Viejo.

La iglesia de la Merced, muy antigua pero muy bien conservada, con 2 torres a cada lado de diferente estilo la hacen bien especial, ubicada en una de las plazas es un lugar para visitar y apreciar

One of Casco Viejo's oldest buildings. This church dates back to 1680 and was originally situated in Panama Viejo which is now a ruin after it was destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan. The church was moved stone by stone to the current site.

This church had one of those serene pleasant atmospheres. Many churches lose that to commercial concerns or modernisation, not this one. Very nice. What was excellent about Panamanian churches was free to enter, unlike so many of its European counterparts.

Dating back to 1680, La Iglesia de la Merced sits in the heart of Casco Viejo. Its weathered stone facade is made of stones recovered from the abandoned original old city of Panama, and is flanked by two gleaming white stucco bell towers, with bells chiming every 15 minutes.
In the alcoves are numerous statues dedicated to various saints. Old and very well maintained. Beautiful!

Muita história e beleza juntas! A Igreja é muito bonita, e ficará mais em breve. Está sendo reformada. Tem um museu muito bem montado dentro da igreja e não tem custo de entrada. Também vale passar na lojinha de souvenirs interna. Certamente faz parte de uma das paradas quando estiver em Casco Viejo.

Entre el 28 de enero y el 24 de febrero de 1671 Panamá Vieja fue atacada por el pirata Morgan destruyéndole siendo necesario emplazarla nuevamente en el sitio que hoy se encuentra y esta iglesia inicialmente fue construida en la antigua ciudad, aquí lo importante es que la fachada que ahora podemos admirar fue trasladada pieza por pieza, esto me parece admirable.

Among about 4 La Merced churches visited in Central America, 2 of them are with what I would call a "memorable something": the one in Granada where it's memorable to go up the church tower (for some great views of that small town from above); and the one here where it's memorable to visit the small museum right beside (just adjacent to the church part of the building with like a small courtyard in between) where on its 2 small floors are religious displays including those about the "very first" religious settlers in this area called Mercedarians & actually also some "sprawling display" of the scenes relating to the birth of Christ (although that display may just have been for the time of Christmas & New Year when I was visiting). And as for the Church itself too, pretty impressive are the "colorful sculptures" either with colors themselves or with some colorful clothes put on them (to see on the shrines on both sides along the length of the Church and yes actually "quite a number" of those sculptures although the church interior really being a "compact-sized" one), and kind of fascinating among those shrines was one for the lady saint or such supposedly to pray for your "housing wish" (with plenty of small house models to see at her feet likely brought by those who came to pray to her).
Located in the "old town" Casco Viejo (for which I would suggest "a whole day"), at just less than a 5-minute walk from here (straight down the street in front to the left after coming out) is the city's "main cathedral" Catedral Metropolitana with just a quite impressive facade to stand in front and admire the statues of "all 12 Apostles"; and also nearby this church (but not along the street in front) is the "church ruin" of Iglesia de Compania de Jesus just to briefly step inside within its four walls with also an open view of the sky above.
