A must if you see yourself in Tuvalu. In the islands you will see a night density of birds, crabs (hermit crabs and coconut crabs) arachnids and lizards.
In the sea beautiful coral with the typical tropical fish and big clams
When we were there there was not turtle season, so we only saw already hatched eggs

The Islands and Atoll are just amazing with loads of fish, turtles, clams and coral to see. It's about a 30 minute boat right from the main Island but well worth it. We absolutely loved eating fresh fish raw and some cocunts for lunch provided by our guide. If you're new to snorkelling this is perfect as the water is wasit heigh when the tide is out.

This requires a boat ride from the main island. Beautiful area that has lovely water even when the skies are cloudy. Our guide grilled fish and made coconut rice as lunch for us, along with fresh coconut juice. A really lovely day overall - bring lots of water and sunscreen!

Une visite à vraiment faire si on vient ici. Trouvez d’autres personnes pour partager le coût du bateau car c’est onéreux. Mais on est envouté par le décor!

A wonderful day out at the Funafuti Marine Conservation Area. Easy enough to organise through the hotel, met on time and a short walk to the boat - a basic aluminium uncovered dinghy but perfectly adequate for our needs. This is not a luxury tour but a wonderful local experience seeing what the vast lagoon off Funafuti has to offer. A relatively smooth 30 min boat ride and you are there. Crystal clear waters, abundant fish life, stunning white beaches on uninhabited islets and friendly guides with local knowledge. We had three opportunities to snorkel at diffent spots for about half an hour each. A short stop at Fanafale, a small islet inhabited by just four families eking out a subsistence lifestyle with a shared fish and rice lunch completing the experience. Very few people get to Tuvalu and even fewer get out to the Marine Conservation Area. Feel very fortunate to have done so - $200 for the boat and $70 to enter area shared between the three of us, a very good value experience as well.

I travelled to Fualopa with three local Tuvaluans to look at the health of the marine environment. It is a 15km boat trip each way (about 60 minutes). We anchored the small boat near the beach and snorkelled for about 45 minutes. The shallow water has some colourful hard and soft corals, clams, spider shell and small fish. However there has been major coral mortality from previous coral bleaching event (possibly 2015?). If you swim about 50m to the reef slope it drops of to 15 to 20m. The water was very clear and visibility was over 30m. There was a diversity of fish including reef and pelagic fish: Blunt head parrotfish, Passionfruit coral trout, Cod, Bigeye bream, Surgeonfish, Unicornfish, Snappers and Bluefin trevally. Highly recommended.

If you go out of your way, as you will have to to get to Tuvalu, please do not rob yourself of the rare chance to visit this area with islets strung out like pearls on a string.
Look out for rays flying beneath your boat or just lean back and let your mind feast on the tranquility.
Ask for the posibilities regarding snorkling etc. - the marine life is still quite something here.
You might also consider spending the night at one of the two basic cabins on Funafale (bring your own food and insect repellant).
Prepare to go by a small open aluminium boat with the ever reliable Yamaha 40 pushing you forward. A brilliant experience skipping across the lagoon - it is mostly calm, but it can be a bit choppy if passing the openings to the Pacific. We went with a baby of 9 months, but had thankfully borrowed a lifejacket from one of the ever friendly aussie expats.
We had great help from the town council office, and we definately recommend, that you go through them. But please do not expect a full fledged 24h travelagency - plan ahead, but accept, that you may have to change your plans as you are in a small community perched on the brink of nothing in middle of the pacific.

I was constructing a building for the Tuvaluan Fisheries Dept (Govt) with local labour, as a direct means of policing the waters around Tuvalu from pirate fisheries such as Taiwan etc.
The marine conservation areas would be better helped if the Govt educated the people to keep the place rubbish free. The beaches (like most Pacific islands that are not tourist destinations) are strewn with litter of all kinds.

We only came for two days, but it was impossible to organize a reef trip. This needs to be done at the Town Council as there is only one person authorized to go out there, but despite hiking down to the council 4 times, he was never there. It was surprising that with an island of that size, no one knew where he was or when he would turn up to the office and despite leaving him messages, he was never there around the times we were supposed to meet him, but always had just left... it was very frustrating. If this is a must for you, plan to be around at least a week to get out there....

The sun stays out most of the way, we spot a manta and a few shoals of fish, the sea is like a warm bath and the islands picture perfect little Robinson Crusoe dots. The boatmen spend most of their time in hammocks or sitting in plastic chairs in the sea. Between rests they cut green coconuts, lop off the tops and even fashion me a spoon, out of the skin, to scoop out the flesh with. I swim, snorkel and stroll round the islets accompanied by squawking terns. Lonely Planet says the area is sublime. They’re right.
