Those who love Emily Dickinson will love this museum. The docents are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and departs from a reading room. There are some unique family items on display. There are spacious restrooms and a small gift shop inside the house. We were required to wear masks and they are available if you don't have one with you. The first floor of the house is accessible, but not the second. I understand there are but two rooms on the second floor that are part of the tour. The grounds are lovely and making is available both on the grounds and along the street. We did need to book a tour in advance and slots fill up fast.

Seeing the room where Emily wrote most of her poets was thrilling!!
This is a must see for any Dickenson's devotee. The house was just redone - in 2022 - so everything is pristine. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the poet, her family and friends, the architecture of the house, and the culture of western Massachusetts in the mid to late 1800s. They did not portray her as dreamer, a vague figure who drifted through life but a person who lived as Martin Luther King Jr said a "committed life." From the outside looking in to us in this time her life sometimes seems forlorn but - although she had her struggles and sorrows - she was the hero of her own life.
Perhaps in the future the kitchen could be shown along with time for just wandering around.
On a practical point the price is very reasonable!!! Amherst has plenty of restaurants and a fun college vibe - there are two - to it.
A high point was the reciting of poems in many of the rooms.

The recently renovated museum is well worth a visit. The guide made Dickinson come to life and answered the group’s many questions. The home is beautiful and it is very moving to see where the famous poet lived and wrote.

If you are a Dickinson fan this is a must see. If you know nothing about poetry or the poet the docent guide will keep your interest and you'll be educated and entertained.

Wonderful tour experience! The Emily Dickinson Museum was the best museum tour experience I have ever had. The museum has organized tour groups where the tour guide walked the group through The Homestead showing us each room and how it affected Emily's life. The tour experience included not only the story of Emily's life, but also how and why Emily wrote poetry the way that she did. The tour was a very fulfilling experience, and the tour guide made it very special.

Kathryn was an excellent tour guide. Small group tours facilitate interaction. Homestead now beautifully restored.

My husband and I planned our vacation around going to the Emily Dickinson Museum. It was awesome. The guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. She interspersed Emily’s poetry as she described Emily’s life and we viewed all the rooms in the house. Our group interacted and shared easily.

Glad to see it open again! Education, inspiration, interesting, and affordable- kids and students are free and it's cheap for adults. The guide really knows his stuff.

Emily Dickinson Museum reopened mid August and it is a historical tour with a difference.
Our guide, Samuel, was a passionate Emily scholar and brought her character to life through quotes from her poetry and letters. Her approach to poetry and her style was explored briefly too, (you do also get to tour the house in a small tour group).

We stopped at this homestead finding it closed for a lengthy renovation. After parking in one of the metered spaces, we could easily get access to walk around the 1813 house built by the grandfather, then up to the “Evergreens” built by her father for her brother. It's a sizable 3 acre walled estate along main street with other nice homes, churches and even the Town Hall as neighbors.
