Closed but accessible for fans of the poet.
We stopped at this homestead finding it closed for a lengthy renovation. After parking in one of the metered spaces, we could easily get access to walk around the 1813 house built by the grandfather, then up to the “Evergreens” built by her father for her brother. It's a sizable 3 acre walled estate along main street with other nice homes, churches and even the Town Hall as neighbors.

A favorite cultural stop for all literature lovers
2019年11月 • 好友
Although the house museum is currently closed due to Covid, when things return to normal, this is an important stop for anyone planning to attend performances at Tanglewood, Jacobs Pillow or the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Conveniently close to these Berkshire cultural destinations, an afternoon spent at the home of America’s most famous woman poet, is a fabulous way to celebrate the talent of the woman who penned lines like “ There is no frigate like a book to take us lands away” and “I’m nobody! Who are you? Are you nobody too? Then there’s a pair of us - don’t tell”.

If you have somehow missed the magic of her words or forgotten them, what an introduction.

The docents are professional and full of Emily Dickinson trivia. You’ll love your afternoon acquainting or reacquainting yourself with this revolutionary poets life and work. Allow two hours.

We stayed across the street at the charming and very affordable Amherst Inn, but if you’re looking for fancier accommodations, the Inn at Boltwood is a block away ( the former Lord Jeff).

Best docent-led tour EVER!
Absolutely the best docent-led tour I have ever experienced anywhere. Maddie was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, animated, interesting, and inspiring. She did not deliver the dull memorized script that one may encounter in some historic houses. She spoke about the Dickinson family as if they were her own relatives. She made the family, the town, and the period of history come alive. She is clearly passionate about the subject. So worth a visit!

The guide made the visit exceptional
2019年11月 • 夫妻情侣
It is a miracle that the house Emily Dickinson spent her life in has survived largely intact, as has the next-door house of her brother. The museum is painstakingly re-furbishing the main house, and both houses provide a wonderful insight into life of the well-to-do in the mid-1800s. What made our visit exceptional was our guide, who was thoroughly knowledgeable and full of interesting angles on ED's life and poetry without being pedantic or overbearing. We wished we could have sat down with her over a cup of tea or glass of wine to learn still more!

finally after all these years
I went to school in Amherst and lived in the area, but it took a visit from friends to get me to Emily's house. Shame on me. An English major.
We had a good docent and the chance to read some poetry with her aloud outside on the grass after our tour. No talk about the recent efforts to portray her on film. Just as well.

Home of one of America's greatest poets
If you're in the Amherst area, and if you care about American culture, American history, and American poetry, then plan to visit Emily's home and the Evergreens just across the way. As you enter the hall and then visit her bedroom, where she wrote so many of her extraordinary, vital, ever-stunning poems, and look out the window that take in the views of the distant mountains to the south, you may even feel her shimmering presence there. Look for the guided tours and be sure to get over to Susan and Austin's house across the way. Walk through her gardens, and even visit her gravesight a short distance away.

She dealt her pretty words like blades
The museum is a gem. Our guide was a young woman from the college whose enthusiasm and knowledge were awesome. She wants to teach high school English to introduce Dickinson to a new generation and to kindle the kind of joy and excitement about the transformative potential of literature Dickinson can foster. The Museum itself has a thoughtful approach to a difficult and elusive subject as well as an impressive restoration and preservation strategy. It is a pity that collaboration between Amherst College and the other keeper of the legacy, Harvard University, has not yet resulted sharing more. Lending family portraits would be a good start.

A Must See!
The tour guides are totally worth the price of admission. They are so knowledgeable and devoted to extolling Emily Dickinson's life and literary works. You learn so much about the times that she lived in which helps to understand her better. When you go to her brother's home next door (included in the tour) it is totally as it was in the 1800's, you will learn more of the often complicated lives for the Dickinson family members. "Forever is composed of nows." ~Emily Dickinson

Excellent historical tour
We've lived in this area all of our lives, never visiting this historical site. Teachers and Seniors receive a small discount. The tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and the tour which includes the Austin Dickinson home next door is excellent. Take a little extra time to visit the burial site which is in walking distance. Metered parking outside the venue, needs to be extended if you visit the cemetery or stop for lunch in town.

I visited the Houses on July 24th. I came from far away. Wonderful! It was a beautiful day. “Great clouds like ushers leaning, Creation looking on”. Every Emily Dickinson fan should take the tour. Only down side was the lack of sensitivity of our guide. A bit dismissive in attitude. Did not go the extra mile when I asked to have one last peek at the Parlor in Emily Dickinson’s house. He took a glance in and told me there was a large group of people in there. Had he waited a minute or two that group would have moved on and he would have made my day but he chose to not go that extra step. The guides should realize that some of us have waited over forty years for the opportunity to visit these revered locations. After the tour I took a walk over to the graveyard. Emily, her sister, parents and grandparents are together, all in the same fenced off area. Overall the visit was very special and I hope to return some day to do it again, this time with a more accommodating guide.
