“Good place to take the kids”

Great artist, wonderful museum

Rotating exhibits are worth the visit! We stopped by the museum for a short trip we made to western mass, our 4 yr old had a wonderful experience. The exhibits include activities that encourage play while the adults can enjoy the exhibit.

The art room got all three of us involved in a mix media project, that covered quite a bit of time for us. We dropped into the book store after and saw plenty of unique books thay followed us home.

Small but Interactive

This is a small museum. Its targeted to young children. The galleries have wonderful interactive games and crafts for toddlers, pre-school and young school aged children. Adults will find it enjoyable, too, especially if young at heart. Te gift shop is large, affordable, and varied. Allow time for that wonderful experience, too.

Easy, Interesting and Significant

The Eric Carle Picture Book Art Museum is as much an Art Museum as it is a place for kids to "discover" old friends (in particular, the Hungry Caterpillar) and to be creative (with assistance). Clearly "picture book art" is ART and really merits serious attention. The museum also provides interesting, illustrated information about Eric Carle's own very unusual life history. Recommended for people of all ages.

Delightful visit to see an author/illustrator's work I so admire

We recently took a 10 day trip out east and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Art was definitely on our to-do list especially with me being a retired 1st grade teacher. I knew of the museum and its exhibits from the time it was built which was good as we were delayed and only had a half hour to visit. But, even in that too short of time, we were so pleased with how Mr. Carle's works were displayed, especially in the enclosed exhibit room where there were representations from many of his books along with particular written details about the books. The glass display of his tissue papers is delightful as are the very large ones in the center hallways. I have 2 books of the tissue papers and treasure them. One smaller hallway has pictures and write-ups about his personal and creative history. The display of how The Very Hungry Caterpillar was put together is a must-see.
For those who teach or read or hear the Eric Carle books, please visit if you are in the area. And if you don't know his works, go and learn why his books so entertain children. And check out the gift shop!

Great for anyone who is or was a child.

The museum features children’s artists and book writers of many styles, countries and ethnicities. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Facilities are clean and bright and welcoming.

Art + Picture Books = Joy

We were too early to check into our B & B so we looked for nearby attractions. Wow, the Eric Carle Museum was such a treat. Between telling Carle's history & how he did his art, we were most happy to while away some hours in this lovely museum. As a parent & teacher, I also loved walking down Memory Lane in remembering all of the great picture books from my past.

Disappointed

There is not a lot to see here. There are two galleries, a book room, an art studio, a garden, and a gift shop. I thought there would be more exhibits. It was raining so we were unable to walk in the garden.

Not what I thought - but still worth it.

I thought it was going to be more a Museum around Carle’s work especially the hungry caterpillar and grouchy ladybug. So I was sort of surprised when it wasn’t. They have an art studio (Sara our art helper was fantastic) where we did a craft (a diorama of a place for dinosaurs), then there are three galleries to explore (Civil rights, dinosaurs and Eric carles work focused on transportation) but my 4 yr old wasn’t super interested in it, she mostly enjoyed running around the street stickers they had on the floor. There is also a library there that we spent time reading books in. The librarian Natalie was super helpful. The gift shop was full of awesome things. I think it’s a one time stop for us. It was great and worth the $9 admission fee for the one time.

Nice to finally visit a place featuring an author I've always admired

I was in this area once before and didn't get a chance to visit. Thankfully, this time was different. The museum isn't as full as I thought it might be of interesting images and information for adults, but the "movie" is very interesting, and it looks like a fantastic place for children.
