We saw two special exhibits at the Addison today. "Robert Frank and Todd Webb: 1955" and "A Long Arc: Photography and the American South." First the good. Both exhibits have phenomenal photographs of people of a different era, of events and important parts of our history. (The latter exhibit is a cross-section of pictures from before the Civil War through today, which makes for a very interesting photographic history journey.) You've seen many of the Robert Frank photos before. Todd Webb took a road trip across America at the same time and apparently never published his quite interesting photographs. Now the not so good. On a minor issue, many of the Frank and Webb photos were printed only recently and, quite frankly, the quality didn't seem as good as I would expect. Nonetheless, the pictures are so good that really didn't matter. What did matter, at least for me, was the accompanying commentary by the curators about the Frank and Webb photographs. Resolutely and gratuitously negative about America; oppression everywhere. A classic is the commentary on this picture. People riding horses at a rodeo in Nebraska, each carrying an American flag, is a "humorous photo" that "evinces the town's overzealous efforts to be perfectly American"? Really? Where does that come from? Next to another picture was a quote from the photographer that capitalized the word "black." His book was published in the 1950's. If the quote is from the book it seems unlikely the word would have been capitalized. Another picture is of a white woman holding her daughter, looking generally toward a black woman in the very front of the picture who was walking away and who did not appear to be interacting with the white woman at all. The commentary stated in so many words that the prejudiced white woman was looking disapprovingly at the black woman. Perhaps the photographer had observed what had happened enough to know that was the case. But the commentary was not as far as I could tell a quote from the photographer. So did the curator make this up for effect? From the picture itself there are plenty of other alternative explanations for the woman's look, which may have had nothing to do with someone who was barely in the picture. If so, why emphasize the worst? The exhibit dedicated to southern photography was handled much better even though it dealt much more directly with obvious inequality such as slavery, Jim Crow regulations, backlash against the civil rights movement, etc.

This is an excellent art museum on the campus of Phillips Academy. The permanent collection is very good, and the shows are consistently first rate and well curated. The current photography show is well worth a visit.
One note for the thrifty: There is no charge for museum admission and there is plenty of free parking.

The Addison Gallery of American Art contains a very good collection of American artists with multiple special exhibitions in its galleries. During my visit the Museum had an extensive collection of the works of Alison Elizabeth Taylor on exhibition, as well as a display of American Women artists and their contributions to Abstraction. Don't miss the large collection of historic wooden sailing ship models in the basement.

Had a day to kill in Andover and spent a very enjoyable couple of hours looking around this Art Gallery. A magnificent building set in beautiful grounds housing a permanent collection of American Art and showing temporary exhibitions. Well worth the visit.

One of the special exhibitions -- Alison Elizabeth Taylor's works - blew me away. I regret not having visited more often - a neighborhood attraction.

This museum of American Art sits on the very pretty campus of Phillips Andover. The permanent collection is quite strong, and the exhibitions are consistently high quality and well curated.
An added bonus: There is no admission fee.

The Addison Gallery is a great place to visit if you stop by Andover, Massachusetts. It is part of the worldwide known Phillips Academy (PA) Boarding School. During the school year, the gallery offers several different exhibitions of American art.

Looking for classical American Artwork and colonial decor? Then, this is the place! Located in Andover at the Phillips Academy, this museum offers free admission with a moderate collection of artwork. The collections are located on two floors... You'll find tall case clocks and portraiture. I loved the open and very accessible library. For me, the best part of the museum is the collection of model ships. Wow! One of the best is housed in the library. Tragically, most of the ships are hidden in the basement in narrow corridors leading to the office space. I suspect that most visitors never go the basement...that's where the restrooms are and this was a treasure. The Addison could easily move that ship collection to the spacious meeting space adjacent to the library... Why are we hiding these beautiful ships. This is definitely a museum to visit: then stroll outside around the Academy's grounds.

This was a great little museum to visit for a couple hours. Good American art - Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, etc. But our favorite was the Superman and Wonder Woman exhibit -very insightful. Friendly helpful staff, and the museum was free. GPS steered us wrong though - use 2 Chapel Street as the GPS goal to get to parking that works.
