Beautiful church worth visiting. Lots of history. Small graveyard & huge stunning Morton Bay Fig Tree in garden area. Stained glass Rose window quite special.

This chapel has been known by various names in the past and was originally built for the Melanesian Mission whose school and headquarters were based on the Island between 1866 and 1920. It was primarily established as a memorial to John Coleridge Patteson who was ordained a Bishop in 1861 but was killed in 1871 in the Solomon Islands.
The stone chapel took five years to build as many delays were experienced in importing some of the building materials. The chapel was originally part of a larger Mission complex of buildings, gardens and agricultural lands. After the Mission headquarters was moved to the Solomon Islands in 1919-20 most of the timber buildings were dismantled, much of the land was sold and the Chapel was handed over to the Norfolk Islanders. It is used by the Church of England as one of their places of worship.
Notable internal features are the timber roof which is designed like the keel of a ship. The black marble tiles on the floor and the Baptismal font which are from England. The glorious stained glass windows including the large Rose Window, the five panels that sit beneath it and the five larger panels in the presbytery behind the altar. The carved walnut reredos and hand carved pearl-shell pew decorations as well as the 1876 organ. The wooden pews also face each other along each side of the wall rather than face the altar.
Free to enter and well worth a visit.

Impressive outside but inside Wow. Timber roof frame in the form of an inverted boat hull - all doweled no nails, stained glass windows, marble floors. Revisited again after doing a tour (gained the interesting facts). A must do.

This is a delightful chapel with a rich history and deep connection with many Pacific cultures. Well worth a visit (it’s open at all times) and while there would encourage you to take a short stroll the the magnificent fig tree behind the cemetery,

A most beautiful church inside and out and still in use to-day. Beside it is a tree not to be missed while you're on Norfolk.

Beautiful quiet Island, loved the history of the penal settlement often told by ancestors off the Bounty. The natural beauty of the coastline, the pines and unbleached coral and clear water.A chilled place to go but lots of national park to walk in if you want a more active vacation.Lovely boutique shops as well.

A special memorial place. Built to honour bishop Barnaby, mistakenly identified a cohort of slavers and murdered, this beautiful church was built as a memorial to him. Special touches from all over the world, were sent to build it in his honour. These included marble floors and font, mother of pearl inlay on pews, spectacular lead light windows and to top it off a magnificent pipe organ! You can hear it on Sundays during regular service. So worth the visit.

We visited as part of the free half day tour offered by Bauntiks tours. The building was magnificent and the indoor woodwork made from local Timbers was spectacular .
