A bit off the tourist track, Anson beach is one of the relatively few sandy beaches on Norfolk Island and is popular with local surfers. Access to the beach is via a well graded track that winds down the very steep slopes - a remarkable engineering feat especially given the landslide issues the area experiences. The walk is well worth the effort - the beach is beautifully framed by cliffs and the power of the waves mesmerizing. Well worth the effort. Could use a little more interpretation - there is plenty of signage in other locations around the island and it’d be great if there was more especially at the car park above the beach.

The views and scenery were amazing and the walk down the zig zag track was exhilarating. Just park your car at the lookout/picnic area and the track is on the right following a little gully.

We decided to hike down to the beach and started following the gently sloping track down. Sadly, halfway down, there was a sign saying the track was closed due to falling rocks. So, we abandoned the track and climbed down the steep hill to the beach. This seemed pretty dangerous but we wanted to get down there. In hindsight I wouldn't recommend doing this but we saw someone later do the same thing. We made it safely down but didn't swim as the sea was so rough. Cooled our feet down in some water that was skimming across the beach, and then ate some lunch we had brought with us, using the picnic table provided. We walked back up the same sloping track which luckily had no falling rocks at the time. There is a very, special cliff-face there which is worth examining. There are beautiful views available here.

We stopped here for morning tea on our half day tour. A great picnic spot with full amenities and the view over Anson Bay is stunning. The water colour is divine. You can take a walk down to the beach but we didn't have time.

even if you dont go down the track to the beach seeing the view from up the top is a photo shot at its best. beautiful beach with a great picnic area and toilets up the top.

Amazing views from the top of the cliffs. Even better to take the meandering trail down to the waters edge. It's not a steep climb as the trail zig zags its way down so is accessible for those with moderate fitness levels. Check out the WW2 bunkers - one near the trail on the way down, the other one the cliff edge at the southern end of the beach.

While great to view from the designated parking & picnic area, or from the pasture near the pistol range, it is also a stunning beach to walk on and dip into the water. A relatively good path down, but maybe slightly steep uphill 10 minutes back to the ridge, could deter some, but absolutely worth the effort to spend time on this beach. Photographers will love the cliff top shots down to a pristine beach and crytsal blue waters.

This is a lovely, small cove near the northern-most tip of Norfolk Island. In fact, the whole (short) drive up the east coast is a total delight. We viewed the bay from the lookout above and didn't go down the steep path to the small beach. While the water looked inviting, had heard it can be a treacherous place to take a dip.

One of my favourite Beaches in Norfolk Island. Very picturesque.
Unfortunately it is quite difficult to access if you have mobility issues. A zig zag 15 minute walk will take you to the bottom but add a few extra minutes for the return back up.
So much to take in along the way with the Norfolk Pines, Rock Faces and of course the beach itself.
As a bonus we were the only ones on the beach when we visited.

If you can manage the walk down to Anson Bay you will see interesting rock formations up the cliffs. We did some rock hopping during lowish tide to the right which was quite interesting. Again the rock formations and watching the waves coming in on both sides of you.
We took snorkelling gear down but didn't use it because it was too rough. Some in the group liked playing in the waves which was something different from Emily Bay.

Hi. I am going in October, to Norfolk. Do you recommend hiring a 4wd or a normal car. Are there many places that are 4wd only?

I don't know if they even have 4WD cars to hire. You will get a free car usually with your accommodation and you just need a normal car. If you see a sign that says "impassable when wet", they mean it so don't attempt it if it is raining or has just rained as they are slippery but are fine when it is dry. A few of the hills are steep but the cars will cope. The roads are a lot better than they were years ago thank goodness as I remember having to back up 1 road as my brother-in-law's car wasn't tough enough for me to drive up the right way lol. There is a 4WD tour run by 1 of the Christian family through the forest which is fun if you enjoy that sort of thing. My elderly mother thought it was hilarious.
