The Crankmill was originally built in 1827 and was used as a store but after it was flooded other uses were found. Initially to house families and hospital patients due to overcrowding in the other facilities until in 1837 it was turned into a human powered Crankmill. It operated as such until the settlement was closed in 1855.

Standing there looking at it today you would not have guessed the cruelties that the convicts endured working there. The two cranks were operated by two teams each of 48 convicts who all wore leg irons working two shifts a day to produce about 20 bushels of grain a shift.

No wonder the convicts constantly sabotaged the mechanisms.

Situated not far from the pier this is a gem of an old building.
Read the history and many great photos can be taken around the building.

This building is situated at Kingston Pier and each time we visited the Pier this building just commanded attention. Well worth walking around and looking through the many windows. Quite a spectacular historical building.

Sometimes these places have more character in their rundown state. Wonderful to walk through and see the stonewrk form from 200+ years ago.

The Crankmill is located at Kingston Pier in the world heritage listed area. The Crankmill served as a facility for convicts from 1837 to 1855. Steeped in convict history, a team of convicts was required to turn two gigantic grindstones to mill the corn.

When you stand in front of this dark and gloomy building you really can't imagine the torturous methods that were used to break the spirit of the convicts.
One hundred convicts would be led into the crank mill early each morning to turn the incredibly heavy capstan, two huge metal grinding stones which milled the corn. The overseers really didn't care amount the quantity of flour that was milled only to make as hard as possible for the convicts.

This was indeed a crewl place to be located in if you were a convict. Read all about the history before you go in.
