It is a very old mill building that has an interesting history. It is still producing wooden picture frames. The tour is interesting and brief. Sometimes art shows are displayed there also.

Hidden gem of Arlington

Off the beaten path but worth finding. Small museum changing exhibits upstairs . Visit the Shaker store next door for some unique items . Be sure to check the website before you go for their hours.

Local history - fantastic tour!

What a gem! We stopped in here on our way to the battlefields of Lexington and Concord. Our tour was great - we toured the historic old mill (building is from Civil War era but mill site was used over the past 300 years) and saw some of the oval frames still being made of the original lathes. This was originally a spice mill but it was converted to a woodworking mill when it was bought by Schwamb. Very interesting and, bonus, the tours are free.

Lots of local history with a great personal tour!

This was an unexpected gem in Arlington. We saw this advertised on a map in Trader Joe's so we decided to check it out one Saturday -- I'm so glad we did!
The tours and building are only open on Tuesday and Saturday (I believe 11am-3pm) and we came around 3:10. A member of the board of directors was finishing up with a couple and was enthusiastic to invite us in an give an hour long tour after hours. We learned about the history of the site, the woodworking still done, and saw many of the frames that are still being made.
This tour can be as quick or as detailed as you wish. And it's free!

For more than 300 years this historic mill has produced hand-made picture frames on \
the same equipment. Really very interesting. There are musical programs and art show held there. Or find out when you can watch the men at work and take a tour.
This is a DO NOT MISS. Across the drive is another shop with handmade wooden items such as furniture and smaller decorative boxes.Visitors to the Mill are cordially welcomed. The Mill is located on the Revolutionary Battle Route to Lexington and Concord, 17 Mill Lane at 29 Lowell Street, off 1215 Massachusetts Ave. in Arlington, Massachusetts. The three Mill buildings, including the woodworking shop, are open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P. M. Machinery demonstrations are given in the woodworking shop. Please call ahead at

A Suprise Right Off the Bike Path!
2017年1月 • 家庭
I'd walked by the building a few times, but on a Saturday afternoon after an early lunch, I took my wife, daughter (7) and daughters friend down here to check it and explain about using water for power. We stuck our head in and were greeted and asked if we wanted a tour... Why Not!

Well, the girls loved it... Who knew it was a picture factory that still made handcrafted frames! Our tour lasted about 40 minutes and told the history of the buildings, how frames were made and so on... Pretty amazing.

A $5 donation is asked though there is no set admission.. More than reasonable for such a specular little site and a piece of history. Next time we have visitors in town, I'd definitely take them here for a glimpse of the past!

An old mill with lots of history!
2015年10月 • 家庭
The Old Schwamb Mill is a very old mill building near Arlington Heights, off of the bike path and close to Massachusetts Avenue. It is currently open on Tuesdays and Saturdays for tours, when people actually turn on the lathes and machinery - it is still a working mill (there's been some sort of mill on the site since the late 1600s).

Worth the visit if you happen to be nearby on a Tuesday or Saturday. If you get there, don't forget the Shaker workshop just across from the entrance!

Beautiful Old Mill Building

This is a small place, but really interesting. The tour guide shared information about the mill, and also information about the history of the area. The current woodworker was not there when we toured, but the tour guide did start up one piece of machinery for us to see how it worked. There is also a small art gallery, which showcases local artists. But most impressive is the building itself - so much gorgeous wood!

Visit the past and love it.
OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATED MILL IN THE COUNTRY. Makes picture frames by hand as they did in the 1800's and the same family owned it for over 100 years. Doesn't take long to tour but well worth the trip.

Lovely little place

Lovely little place. Had a very knowledgeable tour guide that showed us how frames were made back in the 19th century. No fee is required but they do ask for a $5 donation.
