I have been biking this trail since it was built in the late 90's and enjoyed it as a favorite ride. The route takes you through some scenic areas, including farms and ponds, one with a huge Beaver Dam. However, it is showing its age with so many roots and divots from Ayer to Pepperell that it is unenjoyable to bike. Other bike trails regularly patch their trails and ones even older than the NRRT are in far better shape. The nearby Bruce Freeman Trail has repaired much of its older section and is a pleasure to ride.

Such a beautiful place to walk! A wide trail, giving walkers and bikers a chance to safely co-exist. I will certainly be back to explore more of it in the different seasons.

We camped in nearby Littleton and hopped on the trailhead at Groton and it was a beautiful walkway for us to take the dogs on a nice walk on a gorgeous fall day. There were lots of people out that day but there was plenty of room on the trail for bikers, walkers and joggers - we didn't have enough time to really explore the length of the trail but will definitely return. The paved trail is very easy for for both humans and pups to traverse, highly recommend!

This paved rail trail runs from Ayer Center, through Groton and Pepperell, to the outskirts of Nashua. Part of it is along the Nashua River, and most of it is shady and rural. The few road crossings are not busy, other than the one in Pepperell Center. But that also has a convenience store and ice cream shop, so it's a good place to stop anyway!
There are some speed demon bikers, but it's not too bad. Mostly families and singles enjoying some nature and exercise. And tho there are many bumps caused by tree roots, they're marked with white paint, so at least you know they're there.
If you're a geocacher, there are several caches along the Trail.
The one downside is that the northern end of the trail doesn't connect to Mine Falls Park in Nashua, which is also a nice place to walk/ride.

This trail runs from behind the Santander Bank in downtown Ayer, MA to the south side of Nashua, NH and is paved and reasonably flat. It goes through neighborhoods, towns, fields, ponds and woods for more than 12 scenic miles. There are a few places for parking and easy access along the trail, in Groton, East Pepperell and at the south end in Ayer and the north end in S. Nashua, NH.
The commuter parking area in Ayer has been closed during the summer of 2019 for the construction of a new parking garage that will serve the commuter rail station as well as the bike trail. The previous parking area in Ayer had several spots reserved for rail trail use.
Until the parking facility in Ayer is completed, I recommend parking in Groton center behind the businesses along Station Street where there is plenty of parking on a gravel lot right beside the trail. Happy riding.

Such a wonderful place to walk, run and bike. Almost everyone has excellent trail manners. Need our bikers to remember to shout out they are approaching from behind a trail mate.

My kids and I use the trail at least once a week. We park in Pepperell and will bike to Groton and Ayer for lunch or to go the librarys. Lots of wildlife to see along the way!

We walked several section sof the trail, from Groton to Pepperrell, a shorter stretch around Hollis (?), and from Ayer towards Groton. Great surface, mainly overhung with pretty trees, much as you see in the pic above!
Perfect for biking, or a leisurely stroll - dont expect miracle views, but it is very pleasant. One day we went on a fine September Sunday, which was perhaps a mistake as the trail was very busy with bikes - so walkers had to keep moving out of the way!
Well worth a stroll though.

This trail is beautiful. Well used by bikers, walkers, runners, inline skaters, you name it. If your riding round trip, the ride back from Nashua to Ayer seems to be a bit more on the uphill side . Not a killer, just a kicker at the end of a long ride

On the Nashua side, there's a great bike shop called Goodales Bike Shop on Broad Street. They even sponsor rides out of their shop a couple of nights per week. (I didn't realize they did rentals until I looked it up for you, but worth checking them out.) They have 3 locations so be sure to click on Nashua (my link got rejected... Sorry!)
