It’s an amazing experience but not for beginners. The walk is difficult, exhausting and high-altitude - which makes it even more difficult. The most difficult part, for me, is to climb the top of the Acatenango to see the dawn - a climb that is quite steep, full of stones, made at 4am (in the dark - so a headlamp is indispensable) and with a cold killing and at more than 3900m altitude.
We made the climb with the Campify agency and it was the best decision since our group had only 7 people with 2 guides and we slept in an exclusive camp, with privileged views of the volcano of Fuego and beds type catre, more comfortable and less cold than the traditional mattresses that are placed on the ground as in the other camps.
Tips: The vast majority of agencies that are economical take groups of 20 to 30 people (in the tent, sleep about 15 people stacked without any comfort and privacy). It’s worth paying a little more with an agency that has smaller groups and more exclusive campsites overlooking the volcano, and better beds. The experience will be much better.

Hiking Acatenango was an absolutely incredible experience. Cannot recommend this enough! Obviously not for the faint of heart. It’s a tough hike anyway and the elevation makes it even harder. Be prepared to pace accordingly, drink lots of water, take breaks when you need to, deep breaths, etc.
We used Old Town Outfitters and had a fabulous experience. Our guide Benny was fantastic and took great care of us. The whole experience was unreal. You must do the overnight to really see the Fuego eruptions — it’s so much better in the dark so you can see the glow of the molten lava rocks.
Bring lots of warm layers for the overnight and sunrise summit!! It is FREEZING at the top. And don’t be shy about using walking poles. It made a huge difference for me.

Our one-day excursion to Acatenango Volcano was an unforgettable experience! The day began with a smooth drive up to the base of the volcano, where our friendly guide provided us with fascinating insights about the area’s history and geology. The car ride was comfortable, and the anticipation for the hike made the journey fly by.
Once we arrived at the starting point of our hike, we were met with stunning views that set the tone for the rest of the day. The hike itself was manageable, with just the right level of challenge for a day trip. Our guide paced the hike perfectly, ensuring we had plenty of breaks to catch our breath and take in the breathtaking scenery. The terrain was varied and offered plenty of photo opportunities, so don’t forget your camera!
The summit offered panoramic views that were truly awe-inspiring. The best part was watching live volcanic explosions (the volcano erupts every 20 minutes or so). Standing at the top and gazing out at the surrounding volcanic landscape was a humbling experience.
The return trip was equally pleasant, with our guide ensuring we were comfortable and well taken care of. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the region!

The Trek on the Acatenango is on of the best experience of my life; very hard to get on top, you need to hike for 6/7 Hours in very hot temperature during the day;
We camp somewhere around 3500m in front of the Volcano de Fuego, the view is something exeptional diring the night.. you can see big explosion of lava every 20 mins .
Than 3am we wake up to start climb the last 500m for the sunrise from the top...
Something that cant be explained...
Must do it ones in the life...

Guatemala surprised me, the hiking experience on the Acatenango Volcano was wonderful and very rewarding. I recommend not underestimating the cold up there as well as bringing a flashlight, hat, gloves and scarf for the night at the Fire Volcano.

I did an overnight Acatenago with an option to hike to nearby Fuego ridge to watch eruption up close.
There is no words to describe looking down and seeing clouds. In other words, you will be in another world. The hike will provide you with scenic sights, adventure, and opportunity to make new friends. There are many companies in Antigua that will offer you this experience.
Here is a but part: high altitude. You will be going from roughly 5000 ft in Antigua to over 13000 for Acatenago. The altitude will get you. It is important to do proper training and be prepare to face the altitude sickness consequemces. (For me, i felt like I ran 3 miles by simply going mere 20 meters up). The hike is also strenious uphill. (On the downhill part, you also will deal with loose rocks). So, I would recommend using hiking poles.
In short, it is not a walk in the park. If you only do ocassional baby hikes, you should probably reconsider it.
Still, it is worth challenging yourself, exploring your limits and reaping rewards at sunset.

Travelling at the age of 53 years togehter withe my wife and our daughter (20 years), we had mixed expectations at first. Leaving Antigua at 7:45am, we arrived at the starting point at 2400m a.s.l. at 8:45am. The first section passed over lava granulate that made steps a bit difficult. Second part was via steps and across corn fields till the edge of the cloud forrest. At 10:10am we arrived at the park entrance. Passing the cloud and later pine forrests, we arrived at the lunch spot at 3200m at 12:00 pm. 45min lunch break with delicious lunch packs provide by our tour operator OX Adventures. Another 45min later, we arrived at the base camp at 3600m asl. The view is amazing when clear. As it openened up during the afternoon, we witnessed several eruptions of Volcano Fuego and decided to hop on the night trek on the volcanoes edge. 4:30 pm we started our 30min descent to the saddle and another 45 min ascent towards the volcanoe. Up there, we saw the volcanoe and a beautiful sunset. Unfortunately the strong wind chilled a lot despite every single layer we wore.
At 7:30pm, we returned and at 8:30pm we arrived back at our base camp. Diner and a large bonfire was set by our colleagues. The night was cold, but the cottages helped a lot. In the middle of the night, we saw Fuego spitting fire balls in the air.
At 3:20am, our guide Romeo called for the start to the summit. Headlamps and tired legs made the climb a bit difficult, but the closer we came to the summit, the more we wanted to reach it.
At 5:30am, we reached the summit and had a fabulous view on large parts of Guatemala from its 3967m. Wind was very chilly and strong, but with our Fuego experience, we just carried every single layer and felt ok. Gloves and cap were essential. At 6:30am, just as Fuego started another eruption, we started our descent and at 7:00am we were at the base camp for breakfast. 7:30am we started the next descent to the colleting point which we reached at 9:30am. At 10:30am we were back in Antigua after this liftetime experience.
Our mixed expectations were changed to satisfying and positive feelings. The climb up and down is a physical challenge, but even at our age easy to perform and quite a few of the younger ones struggled much more.

Hi everyone!
Is there anyone who hike the mountain in Mid- June?
I have heard that June is very wet so it would be rainy.
Is it hard to see the volcano even when I am on the top?
撰写日期:2022年5月31日
It is possible to use mobile internet at the base camp or next to the summit?
撰写日期:2022年1月16日
Sinceramente yo no e visto, pero no hace falta 4x4 para llegar a la base. Y tampoco hay camino para travesía de ese tipo ya que es un parque y reserva

What if the weather doesn’t cooperate? I’m planning to go next week and I’m seeing that there’s a thunderstorm happening during the days I want to go.. does it get canceled? Is it safe?

Sorry, I dont know how they do if weather is bad. But most likely you will will not have any problems with the weather. Enjoy!

Hola! Alguien sabe si al contratar la excursión para el volcán Acatenango con una agencia (tropicana, Wicho&Charlie’s o cualquier otra) ésta incluye un seguro por si pasa algo durante la excursión?

I have hip problem and can only manage to walk about an hour. Is there an easy way to see this volcano?
撰写日期:2019年6月1日
Yes, the camping area you will have a perfectly good viewpoint and can see and hear its eruptions. I have seen people take horses. The only unfortunate thing is the horses aren’t well taken care of so I’m usually against that. But thats totally up to you. Hiking wouldn’t be an option though, its between a moderate and difficult trek in my opinion and definitely not short.

Looks like tours are still going up Acatenango despite Fuegos violent eruption last year. Have things been safe since last summer when Fuego was erupting?
撰写日期:2019年1月13日
Is anything really safe? If you mean would this activity be performed in the U.S? Definitely not. Did I feel safe? Absolutely! But what do I know? I don’t think any tourist in a tour group has ever died from Fuego’s lava and hundreds of people go up it every day. If anything is dangerous its Pacaya. You are close enough to the lava to throw rocks at it lol. But on Acatenango your on a completely different mountain, if anything I’d imagine its safer than being down below. Don’t waste your time questioning safety. If tour are going up and your seeing hundreds of happy people coming down then its safe. I would just recommend going with a reputable tour guide and not going by yourself. Or if you do, don’t go to the very top because of extreme weather and cold. The tours stop I believe about 900 feet below the summit.

How long in advance should one book the volcano hike? I would like do the hike between 23rd-27th Dec 2018. Is it possible to go to Antigua and book depending on the weather etc or you recommend booking in advance? I have read on a blog that prices can vary as much as 4 times between companies too.
撰写日期:2018年10月2日
There are many agencies in Antigua that you can book through as late as a day before the hike! Prices do vary a lot and so do experiences. Some companies carry all your equipment for you, feed you well and give you a really nice place to stay. Others may be more rugged! I would look into what a group makes you carry, where you stay, and what food is provided before you go so that you can plan or pack with that all in mind!

Im the only one who has noticed that most of Tropicana’s reviews look really fake? I don’t understand why tripadvisor let’s this happen? Can we trust this reviews?
撰写日期:2018年9月21日
All the tours offered in Antigua pretty much end up to be with a 2-3 companies. I booked the tour directly with Aprode through whatapps, and we were later join at the basecamp by a much bigger group of people that booked through various agencies. We paid just a few dollars more than them, but we got a much better service/meals/sleep. I highly recommend to just contact Aprode through Whatapps and skip the middleman-agencies.
