Pretty little church that has an upstairs section with artifacts and archways to look out onto the town square. The main floor has elaborate alters all around the outside. There are silver religious artifacts, textiles and more upstairs.

Saint Tryphon's head is inside the reliquary; he is the patron saint of Kotor. In about 809, Venetian sailors were returning from modern day Turkey with his remains when a storm forced them ashore and continued to storm whenever they planned to leave. So, the remains stayed here in Kotor.
He was a goose-herder near modern day Syria and gained a reputation as a healer. Roman Emperor Decius martyred (beheaded) him in 250.
The church was begin in the mid-1100's and suffered from four earthquakes. As a result, the architectural style style evolved over the ages into the Romanesque-Renaissance-Baroque structure of the cathedral today.
Of interest is the aftermath of the 1667 earthquake: buildings fell, fires spread, the death toll was huge and rats carrying the plague infested the city.
Find this beauty in Trg od Katedrale (Pjaca Sv. Tripuna). It is a highlight of visits to Kotor.

This is a lovely old church which dates back to 1166. It’s €3 to enter but that’s because it includes a visit to the museum which is upstairs (and you can walk out on to the balcony between the two towers to get better views of the square). The whole edifice is in such great condition that extensive renovations must have been carried out over the years, but they were done so well that they do not detract at all from the overall appearance.

The inside of this church is just beautiful. Upstairs is a museum with all kinds of candleabra, vestments, and other artifacts. Beautiful pieces of art, both paintings and sculptures. We tried to buy a guidebook, but there were no more in English. Definitely worth visiting!

There is a 3€ charge to go in but it’s worth it. There is a museum upstairs with lots of various artefacts. They are numbered but no explanation as to what they are, not sure if we should have purchased a book telling us what they are.

Tuesday 14th June we visited the amazing Old Town of Kotor, as part of our Lakes of Kotor day tour.
Our Guide did recommend a visit to the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, which she considered one of the top attractions in the Town.
So on arrival at Kotor we made a beeline for the Cathedral. Were a bit surprised that there was a charge of €3 each to enter the Cathedral, which the Guide omitted to mention.
The entrance fee did also include admission to the Museum which we did not know about. We visited the Museum in the upstairs area first before visited here on the ground floor.
Initially the most striking features of the Cathedral are it's two tall clock towers on either side of the main entrance. One of the towers has the year 1166, on it's front, the cathedral was consecrated on 19 June 1166. The other tower has the year 2016, which marked the 850th anniversary of the Cathedral.
On entering the Cathedral we were struck by the height of the exposed brick arches some were supported by marble pillars and others by columns of bricks.
Stop for a moment under an arch and look upwards, at the top of the arch are the very visible remains of old frescoes.
The main altar comprises of a reredos, covering the back wall, containing 18 golden and silver icons. The altar is enclosed by 4 marble columns topped by an ornate cupola.
Take a look at the wall to the right hand side of the reredos there are more remains of frescoes there.
The main altar is flanked on either side by two smaller altars. The one on the right hand side is an ornate silver altar, the other contains a golden tabernacle with a painting of a saint above it.
The walls, around the Cathedral are adorned with icons and religious images.
The festival of Saint Tryphon is held each year in early February.
We did enjoy walking around the Museum, Museum of Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (reviewed separately) and the Cathedral itself, well worth the entrance fee.

Will any of the descriptions of the artifacts in the upstairs museum be in English? Thank you.

All the descriptions were in their language but it didn't take away from my enjoyment.
Are you able to just go into the Cathedral on your own, without a tour guide? What is the cost?

You can enter the church without a guide There is a small charge (less than 5 euros). Be sure to go upstairs where they have a very nice display of religious art and reliquary. There's also a nice balcony view of the streets outside the church.
