A "tiny theater" in a "small complex"

The first of the three "small ruins" of the city all visited on the same day, this is just quite a small Roman amphitheater with the capacity to accommodate at most a few hundred people I would say (especially having been to two in Jordan before this one and one in Tunisia after this one, all three much larger with capacities "for thousands") although yes I'm not quite sure here if the "amphitheater-like steps" a little apart from the Theater itself were added to its capacity for the performances during its time which would have made quite a bit of difference for the number of spectators (nowadays a pretty good "contrasting view" of like the old & the new with some of the city's skyline visible right behind this site while looking from the top of those steps which are right inside the site entrance before coming down to get to the Theater itself). And yes, with this theater being part of a "small complex" and not a stand-alone structure, further interior on the site grounds are like small lecture rooms or such with wall partitions in a long rectangular structure (of a Roman school or college back in the day as mentioned on an info sign) and some "bath structures" one of which actually can be gone down a few steps to its area a little below the ground.

And so, located not far apart from one another, all three of the "small ruins" can easily be reached by a taxi ride for just about 15 minutes between any two of them (with some traffic along those city streets around the sites) where I headed next to Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa (with ancient tombs both above & below the ground and all in just one small area) followed by Pompey's Pillar (a small hill to go up to with a modest-height pillar & two fairly small sphinx statues above).

It is interesting as it is different from most places that you see around Egypt, but if you have been to Greece this will not impress you. If you do go, go with a guide because the story about it makes it more memorable.

A very beautiful place with rich history and amazing architecture, the site was once the city center of Alexandria during the Roman times and the whole site contains a theater, ruins of villas, houses, shops, public baths, mosaics, etc.., the whole place is very worthy to spend time in and get to know more about the rich history of Alexandria, i highly recommend it to everyone visiting the city, it’s truly beautiful.

The Roman Amphitheater in Kom El-Deka, is the only Roman amphitheater in Egypt, dating back to the 2nd century AD. This theater was made of marble and once seated around 800 spectators with galleries, remains of mosaic flooring, and a recreational garden, surrounded by Roman baths and villas. By the time we got to the archaeological site unfortunately it was raining very heavy and of course I forgot my hat on the bus. I did initially walk over to the site and stayed for a few minutes until the rain became more uncomfortable and I backed up the stairs returning to the group who opted not to get wet and visit the amphitheater. Fortunately the the rain began to let up some what and I found another staircase and went down to the bottom level right next to the amphitheater and took pictures.

This is a very well preserved piece of history that reminds us that the Romans controlled Egypt at their point in history. There is still work being done on the excavation and we were free to walk almost the entire site. There are some floors that are mosaic and quite beautiful.

We visited the place, as part of an organized day tour. While the visit was not very long (30-40 minutes) it was more than sufficient for us to walk the entire site, and learn both about the theater and the nearby gymnasium.
