My visit to the Jaques Art Center was by chance as I was passing through Atkin on my way farther East. My experience was a rewarding surprise in part because of the history I had with Lee and his wife Florence that began in the late l960s when i first visited them as a young artist at their home near St. Paul. This museum's tribute to one of America's most accomplished artists in the field of Naturalism and the portrayal of our country's natural history is a powerful well spring of inspiration for young and emerging artists. It is also a reminder of what an important contribution Lee and Florence Jaaues as well have made to the art and literature of our country.
Lee remains a never ending source of inspiration for me in my work and has been so since my first visit with him as a young man. Congratulations to the Jaques Art Center for its commitment to what fine art is as a fundamental strength of our culture.

I am new to Aitkin and was going through some city withdrawals when I randomly found this place. The pictures here really don't do this little gem justice. Below are 5 reasons to go.
1. The building is a historical site, so you are walking through history both inside and outside.
2. It has the most extensive Jaques collection outside the Bell Museum. (Full transparency I had no idea who Francis Lee Jaques was before I visited the place, but the story and art are fascinating.) For a one-stoplight town, this is impressive.
3. They have rotating art exhibitions and different classes. The classes are low-cost or free because they want to be accessible to the community.
4. It's not very big so you can spend 15 minutes or hours there depending on your preference for looking at art. It's next to the courthouse and across from the high school so it is literally just a few minutes walk after a nice lunch the Block North or a coffee at the Beanery.
5. This place runs entirely on donations and the kindness of volunteers (I will probably volunteer in the future), so if you are interested in giving back to the community, it's also a great option. They also have a little gift shop showcasing work by local artists with a portion of the proceeds going to the museum.

My daughter and I stopped by this gem of a museum on a rainy summer day. The art is memorable, the docent was fabulous, and the building is gorgeous.
Furthermore, anyone familiar with the Bell Museum in the Twin Cities is well advised to stop here.

Quite a unique place for a town the size of Aitkin. Some great artists in the area. Fun to see the talent in the area recognized. We always enjoy the items that are available at the Christmas Boutiquet

This is exactly the kind of place that makes Tripadvisor so valuable...a not well known local treasure. This free museum on a main highway going into Aikin formerly was Aikin's "Carnegie Library." It has been beautifully and lovingly restored.
The central story it tells is of a hugely talented youngster, Francis Lee Jaques & the Jaques Art Center
Francis Lee Jaques was hired by the Museum of Natural History in NYC that sent him all over the world because of his enormous talent. Some of his most beautiful nature works are on display - they're stunning. Two books he wrote with his wife also are available for purchase along with other locally produced art. There are periodic shows featuring nearby artists and local stories.
We were nearby at Ruttgers BayLake Lodge and checked Tripadvisor, which mentioned this. THANKS - this is a five story attraction for people who love art and stories about hugely talented rural people.

This Art center is Aitkins best kept secret. The artist who display their paintings and wares are so talented. Many beautiful items on display and for sales. Anyone driving into or thru Aitkin should definately make a stop and enjoy this Art Center

We are truly blessed to have the Jacques Art Center here in Aitkin. There are so many wonderful people who love and believe in art that they volunteer their time and talents to keep this Center going. Thank You to each one of you who have made this Museum and Unique Gift Shop worth the time it takes to stop and look around. I will warn you though- once you have been there you will want to come back as they change things around and focus on a new art or artist.
They also offer classes of many different genres where you will take home the finished project that YOU made. Put Jacques Art Center on your list of places to see.

This is a very special art gallery with a gift shop that is worth stopping to see if you are in the area. The standing Jacues exhibit is wonderful as was the current show in the front gallery. A great place to see work of local and regional artists
