Fortunately I visited Dantokpa with a friend and he knew where to park and how to navigate the market. Great place to find West African cloth of any quality and pattern. Looks like you can find anything here and it's got a busy crowded energy.

Le grand marché de Cotonou de Dantokpa, se situe au bord de la lagune , qui relie le lac Nokoué à l'Océan et juste à coté de la RNIE1 qui traverse Cotonou . Le nom de Dantokpa en langue Fon signifie " Sur les bords de la lagune de Dan " , Dan ( personnage à trois têtes , portant un python sacré) étant le dieu Vaudou de l'abondance et de la prospérité .
Ce marché , comporte un grand bâtiment de 3 niveaux avec des boxes pour la vente et, de plus tout autour , les étals constituent un marché en plein air de plus de 15.000 stands sur 18 ha . Ce qui constitue le marché le plus grand de l'Afrique de l'Ouest .
On trouve tout dans ce marché en gros ou au détail , comme les matériaux et produits de construction , la quincaillerie , jusqu'aux tissus , pagnes , objets de la maison , produits d'entretien . Les fruits et les légumes et agrumes ainsi que les volailles et la viande , sont regroupés , ce qui facilite les achats . Lorsqu'on entre dans cet espace , il faut observer les femmes vendeuses de rue , qui portent leur chargement en équilibre sur la tête ce qui s'avère assez spectaculaire . Les porteurs font aussi sensation avec leur rapidité de déplacement dans parfois une foule compacte .
Les prix se négocient âprement mais si , vous touriste , voulez acheter , attendez vous à voir les prix grimper . Tout se passe dans une bonne décontraction sans énervement , même si parfois des palabres enflammés vous font détourner le regard comme s'il s'agissait d'une comédie bien organisée . Car , les béninois sont taquins et joueurs entre eux , quand ils s'expriment en langue Fon , majoritaire à Cotonou .

It could be a frustrating and chaotic experience for non-Africans, but I believe that every traveler should visit this market. You can find many thinks from food, fabrics, handicrafts, etc (it doesn't mean that you will find at a better price. There are smaller markets for that). But still, it is a market that you will have a very good feeling about the daily life of the locals. I also recommend crossing the river with the " pirogue", the wooden boat that the locals use for their transportation

Gigantesque et vibrant, le marché à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte à Cotonou. On s'y perd aisément mais il y a toujours une bonne âme pour vous aider à retrouver votre chemin. Conseil : toujours solliciter l'accord des commerçants avant de prendre une photo sous peine de se faire véhémentement houspillé. Pittoresque et unique

I love visiting out door markets when I travel, and this being Africas largest made it to tempting not to visit! I went early, about 8-9 AM because it is cooler. It is busy, sure, but no where have I been able to walk this undisturbed! People greeted me, and when they understood that I do mot speak French, they did their best in English! I just love this people! Oh, did I say that I was alone, female 50 + and speak no French? It went just fine! But do not be naive, wear your bag in front of you!

To reach Accra from Lagos I took a bus and travelled across Benin and Togo. I remember Blvd St Michel, much traffic under a hot and bright Sun. Unfortunately I could not stop and take a walk there.

DanTokpa is the only international market in Benin Republic, Cotonou.
But while visiting dantokpa for the first time, you have to be very careful of démarché.
They will be pretend of helping you asin taking you to places where they are selling what you want but all the places they show you and you bought from there, they has their (comition) also be careful on agboro. Tokpa is very beautiful in dry season but in rain season it's not.
You can buy anything at Dantokpa
