Nice and impressive monument in the centre of Punta Arenas dedicated to one of the most famous personality and traveller. In the middle of the big square surrounded by big trees and tourists.

An impressive memorial monument dedicated to the local hero Ferdinand Magellan is very impressive and located in the main square of Punta Arenas. Local legend is that rubbing the foot of one of the sub statues, you can see which one, will bring you back.

Como nativo de esta bella Región de Magallanes y Antártica, recomiendo totalmente la visita a esta alejada zona de Chile y su capital Punta Arenas.
La Plaza Muñoz Gamero (Plaza de Armas) tiene como figura central el Monumento a Hernando de Magallanes, primer explorador Europeo y circunnavegante además del imponente Indio Patagón. La tradición dice que quien besa el dedo del pié del indio, volverá algún día.

This memorial monument dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan is very impressive and located in the main square of Punta Arenas. Certainly worth taking a closer look for any traveler in Punta Arenas.

Local legend has it that that rubbing (or kissing) the big toe of one of the indigenous people on the statue will bring you back to Punta Arenas. That would not be a bad thing, as this is a beautiful place. This monument dominates the center of the Plaza de Armas. Worth a quick stop for a photo - and a rub.

What a beautiful monument in a beautiful park marred only by the thoughtlessness of some hooligans who felt it necessary to throw red paint all across the monument.
The base was particularly damaged but there was also paint on the upper parts of the monument.

The statue of Magellan sits on top of a monument that also has figures of two indigenous people. If you rub, kiss or suck the toe of one of these indigenous people's statues local gossip says you will return to Punta Arenas. The place to rub is obvious as it is the only part that isn't tarnished. Most people just take photos. European style statue, reminiscent of those found in any European city, which reflects the history of Chile. A few vendors and musicians decorate the park but do not aggressively chase tourists. Worth spending some time here. but it can get crowded, and everyone wants to take photos of the same spot so you may need to be a bit patient, or visit late in the day.

This statue is definitely worth seeing and great for a photo opp. Ferdinand Magellan was a famous Portuguese explorer who planned the first circumnavigation of the earth. A giant statue of this famed sailor stands here. It is widely believed that anyone who touches the statue’s feet will have good luck and success in life. Legend has it if you kiss or rub the foot of one of the figures, you will return to Punta Arenas. It is in the heart of the city and people often choose this spot as a gathering venue.

Our tour took us here. There were a few craft vendors set up around the park as well as some local musicians playing for donations as well as a few CD's for sale.
