VMRDA INS Kursura Submarine Maritime museum

INS Kurusura Submarine is a Soviet built-I-641 class Submarine was inducted into the Indian Navy on 18, December 1969 and the same was decommissioned on 28, February 2001 after 31 years of glorious service to the nation.

INS Kursura - must visit

Very well maintained, good way to see and show kids how submarine looks like. But I visited similar submarine in Hawaii, they have audio commentary.option. Without that is just a visual thing and we can not understand things properly. As I see they have similar option in TU 142 aircraft museum, they should also have same in submarine.

Must visit to view a submarine

A must visit to view the inside of a submarine. Not really an enjoyable visit without any guide or explanations. But if you are nearby visit it though the ticket prices are high

Very Disappointing

I remember the first time I visited the Submarine. It was around 7 pm and the guided tour made me love this museum as a kid and now it's a complete disappointment.
The tickets are more expensive, no guided tours, no AC (only at the entrace), no display or speakers that educate us about what we are seeing, took hardly 5 minutes to walk the length of the submarine.

One of the key attractions of Vizag city, INS Kurusura submarine museum is situated at the Rama Krishna Breach. Rich history is attached to INS Kurusura, it is a Russian submarine commissioned to Indian Navy in 1970. Since then, it served Indian Navy and played a vital role in several wars. In 2001, it was decommissioned and converted in to a museum. We visited the museum in Aug’22 at evening time, when there was moderate crowd. There is a nominal entry fee, few minutes waiting time in que and then got chance to enter the submarine. The entry is allowed generally in a group to avoid over-crowing inside. The museum showcases the life inside a submarine and adversities faced by the submariners in the sea. There are different compartments inside with restroom, kutcha, washroom etc. for crew and officers It also displays engines, pumps, surveillance equipment etc. The entire museum was nicely maintained. The inside tour did not take much time. Overall, a knowledge enhancing visit of a well-maintained museum.

While one could not enter it, since it was shut early in the morning, you are impressed by its size even from the outside! A real submarine, and a massive one at that!

Inside view of first submarine commissioned in Indian Navy

It was our first visit to any submarine. It depicts the tough life of submarine soldiers and officers. The space utilization is fantastic. It houses engines, pumps, surveillance equipments, torpedoes, sleeping area for crew and officers, very tiny cooking area, just two washrooms for entire crew. It is an experience one must have to know the difficult life of our Naval Officers.

A place worth visiting

While at Visakhapatnam my wife and I took the opportunity of visiting this Submarine Museum and it was a good experience seeing how the crew passed their time days after days inside the submarine and seeing the equipment and arrangements.
