Amazing place n an amazing view. Loved the architecture. It's easily accessible and a must see if ur in Ahmedabad even for a few years. You can lose urself here atleast for an hour or two.

Historical place. Entry 25/. While going inside the well, the smell is horrible. Better to skip this place if your schedule is tight

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India 🇮🇳 The Rudabai Stepwell, popularly known as The Adalaj Stepwell.
The complex has beautiful carvings and is not crowded. It’s small enough to be covered in one hour. Can walk all the way down to the water tank area, however the last few steps are kind of slippery. A flashlight is recommended as it’s rather dark in that area.
Construction was started by King Rana Veera Singh in 1499 and completed in the 16th century by Sultan Mahmud Begada.
Architecture: Solanki style
The five stories deep octagonal shaped Stepwell has beautiful carvings, and worth the visit. The legend behind how the Stepwell was completed is a very sad story.
The Sultan of Gujarat Mahmud Begada killed Ran Veer Singh in battle. He fell in love with Ran Veer Singh’s widow Queen Rudabai and wanted to marry her. The Queen agreed on the condition the Sultan complete the Stepwell.
The Sultan completed the Stepwell and had the builders killed so they wouldn’t be able to construct a similar structure. Their graves are located within the complex.
The Queen jumped into the well so she wouldn’t have to marry the Sultan.
Location: Adalaj (near Gandhinagar), Gujarat. About 20 minutes from Ahmedabad.
Entry fee required.

We went here on a Wednesday morning. It was about a 30 min drive from our hotel. You can easily get Uber to the place. The tickets for Indians is Rs 25 and for Non Indians is Rs 300. The place is very well maintained. The architecture is amazing. The carvings are intricate. The place is fantastic for taking great pictures. Totally enjoyed the visit.

Very well preserved monument with beautiful stone carvings. Worth visiting. Non Indians pay a little more entrance fee.

Questo pozzo si trova a 19 km dalla città di Ahmedabad. Ingresso a pagamento, gli stranieri 300 Rp. E' stato costruito dalla regina Rudabai nel 1499 e ci sono tre ingressi che portano a una zona sostenuta da 16 colonne. Si scende di 5 livelli e bello vedere le varie lavorazioni della pietra. E' ben conservato e anche affollato da turisti indiani.

There isn't much to see except for the steps & the well with water where steps end. The Well part is dark, has lot of mosquitoes & not clean. Good to take some photos but nothing much to see or do.

Adalaj stepwell is one of the many new tourist attractions that used to be free and now comes with a ridiculous foreigner price of 300 INR. the stepwell is very similar, but a little bigger, than Dada Harir stepwell in Ahmedabad but :
- Dada Harir is free of charge (with works currently on the site, I fear we will soon have to pay to see it)
- you can't visit every part of the stepwell, as opposed to Dada Harir where you can go absolutely everywhere.
- it is much too clean so the atmosphere is gone.
- there is nothing interesting around when the mosque next Dada Harir is very beautiful.
- the grids made to keep people from falling are extremely ugly.
- it's located far away from downtown, as opposed to Dada Harir again.
so please forget about this stepwell and visit Dada Harir before they ruin it too.
time to boycott this site like many others. the entry ticket is much too expensive and Dada Harir stepwell is A MILLION TIMES better in all aspects (but the size).

This step well is five staired step well which is at a distance of 19km from ahmedabad.All buses go to patan are having a stop at adalaj junction and we need to hire an auto for 50 rs to reach this place.This is a wide spread step well compared to rani ki vav and ASI is maintaining it very well.We need to pay 25rs as entry fees.There are 2 wells in this monuments and there are steps also to go down the well to pick the water.

Could you please tell me how you got to the Stepwell? I have been looking for a city tour of Ahmedabad that includes the Stepwell but could not find anything under $200 for a driver and car for 8 hours touring for one person. Thanks in advance.

Actually I was there for a trip hosted by a college, but you can always take help from the local taxi drivers. Once you reach the airport at Ahmedabad, there are plenty of taxi drivers over there, waiting for a customer. They shall offer you a comparatively reasonable deal and can guide you around local places themselves. You can always ask them to hook you up with someone if you wish to stay for longer and are in need of further service.
