Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park represents a unique opportunity to explore a rocky, arid landscape characterized by thorny shrubs and plants by walking along marked trails. The marked trails aspect of the park makes it unique in India. Even if it is not the sole example of its kind, it must be part of a small group. Having explored two of its trails over a morning, my wishes are for its ilk to grow!

Do make room for this unique place while in Jodhpur. Beyond the Mehrangarhs, Umaid Bhavans and Jaswant Thadas, this place offers true value. In fact, I'd recommend this after you're done with Mehrangarh, perhaps the day after. One of the joys of exploring this place is to soak in different views of the monumental fortress!

Here are some pointers for this place:
1. The price of admission was Rs.100 (Oct 2019) which, given what the place has to offer, is a steal.
2. Guided Walks in the company of naturalists are available for Rs. 200. We didn't opt for this so I am unable to share my experience in this context.
3. They are open all days of the week from 7 AM to 6 PM. The best time to visit, naturally, is to be there at the opening hour and make the most of the 5 hours until noon. In winter, you could consider shifting this to 8 AM if you're sensitive to the morning cold but I'd imagine 7 AM is doable with the right winter gear.
4. There are 4 trails named after colours: Yellow, Green, Red, Blue.
5. Red Trail: Do this if you're short of time and only have about an hour. It isn't the most memorable of the four but should still provide a glimpse of what the park has to offer. This is less than a km long and is doable in 60 minutes at a leisurely pace.
6. Green Trail: This is a must do trail if you have 1.5-2 hours given that it offers great exposure to the rocky habitat along with superb views of the fort. We did this trail and got to climb the ramparts of the fort wall.
7. Yellow Trail: We did this trail along with the Green Trail and in some places, these trails do overlap. They share a similar character in that they provide a fascinating glimpse of unique flora, the rocky habitat and views of Mehrangarh.
8. Blue Trail: I'm told that is the trail you should do if you're a birdwatcher. It is unique among the four in that it includes a lake as part of it and most of the birdwatching is to be done on the shores of the lake. We didn't get to do this trail and hope to do it someday.

Give this park a full day for an immersive experience and half a day at the very least. Anything less will not do justice to this place.

Much of it built in a former aqueduct, this small park (steps and uneven ground) has been rescued from scrubland to a nice arboretum of native plants and animals. Try to get a guide for your walk, which can be 30-90 minutes — your choice. And come early, before the heat sets in. You’ll learn about the local soils, plants, medicinal plants, geology, birds, reptiles — lots. Much nicer than expected. Easy stop before visiting the fort. Clean toilet.

Extremely close to Mehrangarh Fort, this is one place that you cannot afford to miss when you are visiting Jodhpur. Explore nature and wildlife in a completely different light when you visit this wonderful park. You will be stunned to see such greenery in the midst of a place that's known as a desert. Be on a lookout for some birds and animals that you can spot! Taking the guide to this place is a must and if possible, visit either early in the evening or during the second half of the day.

I did this with no prior experience in bird watching. I was able to spot about 17 species of birds, wild boars, a couple of interesting insect breeds and plants. I could also locate a few kinds of rocks at the park itself but the collection of samples at the Visitor Centre is amazing.

The accompanying naturalist suggested that I push my visit from 8am to 7am and it was totally worth it. The passion for the work being done at the Park and the love for its inhabitants came through. The information provided by the guide was good for a lay person. If you're from a scientific background with genuine curiosity, you might have to prod the naturalist a bit and may be disappointed with the responses. Perhaps best to let them know of your area and level of interest or prior experience beforehand so they can come prepared.

Must-do if you want to appreciate what goes into creating a natural habitat from scratch and how different species are essential parts of the natural ecosystem. Best to do this in a group of 2-3 people who are genuinely interested. A larger group may sour the experience for both the guests and the naturalist.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock park is a fine example of natural ecology preservation. Because of the persistent efforts of the local team, the bird species has increased from 65 to over 200 in a span of 15 years. We chose the blue trail near Jaswant Thada. And managed to see quite a few birds like grebes, spot billed duck, lapwings, bulbul, doves, egret, cormorant as well as Kingfisher, Teal, Eurasian Wigeon, Sun Bird. The naturalist who didn't wish to be named, helped site birds and also show calitropis flower, gond plant, lithophytes. He helped us spot a wild hog & pick porcupine quill. The naturalist guided us on the rock formations around the blue trail. It was so beautiful to see igneous rocks chequered with seemingly red paint which was actually iron from lava solidifying much after silica solidified forming the breathtaking pattern. Sedimentary rock like sandstone was in close proximity to igneous formations. Igneous rock in the Aravalli dates back to 750 mn years ago, part of the world's oldest fold mountain range. We also saw the rocks on display at the entrance, and really spectacular trace fossils, as well as body fossils. All in all a highly educational visit, highly recommended for anyone who appreciates nature, ecology conservation. Thank you to Vikram ji for helping us plan the visit. Our autorickshaw driver drove us from Jodhpur hotel to Rao Jodha Desert Rock park and patiently waited there - Mast Kalandar (9829030755), one happy go lucky person just like his name.

Not well maintained and lacks proper guidance. Waste of time and energy if you are with kids and family. Can be useful if inside tour is made more informative.

This was one of the things on our Jodhpur itinerary albeit slightly offbeat.
We did two separate two trails.
The first one was late morning with the sun already out and without a guide. This itself was brilliant enough for us to book another one for early morning (around sunrise) with Harsh, our brilliant guide.
Harsh took us through a beautiful trail talking about the many species of birds, plants and animals, along with their conservation efforts in the region.
Highly recommend this as a guided trip early in the morning.

The views of the fort from the trails are majestic.

This place is one of those hiddern gems of Jodhpur which usually doesn't fall in the tourist circuit. However, it is a must visit place not only for tourists but especially for residents of Jodhpur. With its beautiful trails serpentining through the rocks, forest, ponds and city wall this place gives you an exprerience to never forget. Not only it is a good place to walk but also a good place for bird watching and teaching your children the value of nature. And not to forget the rock presentation laid out at the entrance with different rocks found in and around Jodhpur and some old time fossils.

Have visited multiple times and am sure to visit more in future.
