It is a mere chance that took me to Kodikkarai Beach and the three days I spent in this small village was mostly spent by this serene and lovely beach. Fishermen in small fishing boats come and go, village ladies busily picking
fire woods for their humble dwellings are a constant sight, but to meet the custodians of a Siva Temple where- history has it, where the wedding ceremony of Lord Shiva and Parvathy took place is the hallmark of my trip.

last thursday [31/01/2019 had been to kodikkarai beach/bird/wildlife sanctuary .the sites have vast potential for tourist/nature lovers..presumably with recent GAJA cyclone the places are devastated and coming back to normalcy slowly..it will take considerable time and efforts .
the seashore is excellent vast and it is a great sight from watch towers a good sight for discerning nature lovers .returned back with mixed bag of expectation and disappointment .still the place is worth a visit for family people as well.go prepared with eatables as there is no qrrangements.

The beach is free of crowds as it is in a tiny village by the same name. There is no frequent bus or public transport available from Vedaranyam which is 12kms away.
You need private conveyance to visit each place like bird/wildlife sanctuaries, and beach as they are in the neighborhood of 2-3 kms.

As a Nature-lover I liked the beach very much. This beach is less crowded and is mostly occupied by fishermen. Nice place for bird watching.

Kodikkarai (Point Calimere) is a fishing village. Consequently the beach at Kodikkarai is meant for fishermen and their boats. The beach therefore is very average unless you are the birding enthusiast wherein this becomes a highly interesting place due to the presence of birds and animals in the nearby sanctuary.
It is a fairly neat and lonely beach. Good to just sit and relax.

Once infamous for closest accessible beach from Colombo, this place regained back its fame as beautiful local fishing village, close to point point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary. Try local sea food, meet friendly local fisherman and much more to do.

The beach is not easy to get to. You need to have a car and buy permits to get in. Timings are sketchy and the park can be closed without prior notice. If you get around these issues, this protected national monument is a breathtaking place to visit.

Kodikarai was made famous by the brilliant author Kalki in his book Ponniyyin Selvan. Of course, the place does not look anything as he describes in that novel. Not that many thick forests, the ancient canal from Kodikarai to Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam is all but dead (thank you government), etc.

There are set roads you would take to get to the beach. On the way, you will see wild donkeys and foxes. Please don’t honk or create too much sound. If you notice others trying to disrupt the wildlife, please report them.

When you do come to the beach, you are blown away by the sheet beauty of this place. There is a very ancient dilapidated lighthouse built by Paranathaka Chola in the early 900s. This was destroyed during a tsunami around 950AD. The tsunami of 2004 lifted the remains and brought it several score meters inland. There is a lookout point built near the old lighthouse. Do go up this lookout and you will see the coastline all the way to Ramanathapuram. On a clear day, one can see Sri Lanka. Kalki again featured this old lighthouse in his Ponniyin Selvan novel. A newer lighthouse, an ugly sight as many modern government buildings, stands.

Before you leave the place, visit the Kuzhagar temple (again mentioned in Ponniyin Selvan). This is a very old Shiva temple with numerous inscriptions. Nearby, you can also visit the Vedaranyam temple-- Thirunavvukkuarasar, Thirugnasambandar, and Sundaramurthy Nayanar have all created beautiful songs here.
