Emerald is a small village around 17 km from Ooty bus stand. From there, it's a short uphill walk, and then the road sort of flattens out. You will see the Emerald Dam on the right, though visitors cannot enter that area. If you keep following the main road you will reach a bridge where Emerald Lake and Avalanche Lake meet when the water level is high. There are shaded areas where you could stop and rest for a while.
If you're in the mood, you could continue on the main road until you reach Indranagar.
There is a beautiful hill above Indranagar, although it might not be easy to climb to the top because of the rocky terrain and thick forest.
It's a great place to spend some time close to nature and even have a picnic. If you're brave enough, you could also try exploring the forest.

It is covered with the Avalanche tour. It is 2 om off track while going to Avalanche. It is a very pleasant place. A lovely lake surrounded by greenery. It is serene and peaceful and relaxing. Tourists are not allowed in Emerald dam, but one can enjoy the scenic lake.

They provide boat tours both speed and pontoon. It was wonderful just to sit and look at the lake. Amazing view and they have a restaurant as well.

We started around 9 AM from Ooty and drove towards the beautiful landscape route of Avalanche. We stopped at Avalanche Road Viewpoint. From here, one gets to see a great view of the Emerald lake. We spent few minutes here before moving on. Avalanche is around 25 kms from Charing Cross.
Once you reach the town of Emerald, take a curved right turn towards the Emerald dam. Tourists are not allowed in the Emerald Dam. Just go ahead for almost 2 kms and you get to see a narrow bridge. On the right hand side is Emerald lake and the one on the left is Avalanche lake. We parked the car few metres after the bridge and spent more than a hour walking around and enjoying the raw nature of blue skies, waters and chill wind on the sunny day ! Great combination for the shutterbugs.

A small lake located in Emerald. Not too crowded like the other tourist places, nice place to spend some time.
It is around 1.5 KM from the dam site which further leads to the power generation station. There are no restrictions for visiting this lake. A few years ago there were no proper roads and there was a police check post where the entry was restricted. Now there is a proper road and at few places the road is getting widened.

I was on my way to visit Avalanche lake, and on the way, I found a board for Emerald lake showing distance of 2Km from the main road. So I thought to give it a try, it is really a beautiful lake. It was cloudy when I reach there for later it was sunny for a few minutes and the view was amazing. Green water justifies its name. It's very easy to reach that place, you can practically drive there.
Avalanche lake, on the other hand, is hyped. I mean, it is beautiful and all, but efforts are too much. First, you have to drive around 3 Km inside the forest to reach pickup point (kind of scary on the bike but it's safe). Then to go to the lake, you need to board the bus, its frequency depends on the number of passengers, so you may end up waiting for very long. On the way, you get to a couple of scenic viewpoints. After an hour you reach close to the lake but still, it is very far from the point from where you see the lake (google for its pictures and you won't find any closeup shot). And the water is kind of Ok.
Overall, both the lakes are on the same route, and if you are out for fun then go and visit both. If you have time crunch then visitng Emrald is more then enought.

On the way to Avalanche lake the view of this lake is seen from far a road, it just a scenic view, there is another view point from where other 2 lakes near by are seen, which is more beautiful.

Nop. You can go there without any permission. But cars cannot go till the lake. you may have to walk a bit.

Yes indeed. As such personal safety wasn’t an issue, due to monsoon and heavy rains place was rather deserted. By Nov- Def you would have roads in better condition and a resort near lake may also be functional. Take a local guide or driver with you - who would know places thoroughly

Yes, if you are a nature lover.
I am going to ooty on march 25 with my wife. Is Emerald lake a safe place? And please guide me about the route we have to take to reach near the lake (assuming we have to walk a bit from car park)

It's pretty safe. If you're relying on Google map, make sure you added Fern Hill train station in the suggested route. Else, you may end up driving through some crazy narrow lanes which are steep as well - I'm the unfortunate one experienced this and while returning from the lake, I just added a stop, Fern Hill train station and voila!
I've reviewed this lake and added coordinates of a narrow bridge which separates both the Avalanche and Emerald lakes. It's a bliss to drive up there. I'm on mobile and couldn't get it though. Finally, there's no parking space as such, but you can leave the car off the road, there's plenty of space and walk down a few hundred meters to touch the water!
