Located in old homs, this beautiful old syriac orthodox church contains a relic of the virgin mary (part of her belt), while visiting make sure to check the small old church under the main church building...

A historical and ancient church, significant for Christians. This church holds part of the belt piece from Virgin Mary. Part of the church is new. And there is part of the old one underground. It's interesting and worth to pay a short visit.

It is a nice church, but it's mostly reknown for a discovery of something that was declared to be the belt of Mary, mother of Jesus. It is a dubious claim in my opinion. But I wanted to see it. I had bad luck though, as there was a wedding and while I had a look inside and I stayed outside for some time, I didn't want to be a problem and I didn't see the belt.

During many years, me and my friends spent so much time doing activities run by the youth centre related to Um Al-Zennar Syriac Orthodox Church. Where Aramaic is still used. I was a choir girl in one of most successful choirs in Syria. Mainly because we sang in Aramaic to Aramean Music. Under the main building which is composed of black stone, (because Homs is famous for its volcanic black stones), lies the old church which dates back to 59 A.D. Inside the main building, there is a shrine where the holy girdle of St. Mary is kept.

Ok - so the church looks like any old church - but the special feel to it is the sounds and the feeling you get inside your womb when you step in. If you focus rel well - you can hear a soft and very calming humming sound! Beautiful experience.

Three things about this place:
1- Includes the belt of virgin Mary which is mind blowing to see !
2- Architecture is great, it combines fanciness to rise up to the value of this place, with the simplicity of the city and the authentic beautiful local architecture with the volcanic black stones.
3- this cathedral is located near the old city. if you just wander around the place you will see these amazing old streets with archs like in the pictures.
simply it's a Must visit in Homs ...
