I’ve visited two prison museums. Lushun Prison Relic Museum (Russo-Japanese Prison Museum, 旅順日俄監獄遺址博物館) and this one - Chiayi Prison Museum. The former is much larger, but both are great museums.
This museum is formerly the Chiayi Prison. It was established in 1919, then underwent restoration and was transformed into a museum in 2011.
It is a completely preserved Pennsylvania-system prison building, which is characterized by the cell blocks arranged like spokes (radial layout) round the hub, or central rotunda (the guard station) .
This is a unique historic site, a unique museum. Visitors can learn how the prison was run and know the prisoner's life during those years. A major drawback is that most of the exhibition texts and instructions are in Chinese only.

這次到嘉義美食及打卡之旅，發現嘉義的文化建設做得相當好，優於其它的縣市，舊監獄就是其中之一。當天我沒隨著導覽義工看完全程，因行程另有安排。雖然主管單位立意良善，為免個人參觀者不小心破壞古蹟，所以要集體行動，但也被迫要聽講解，如此下來就要一個小時。若有想來此參觀者，建議留餘裕時間，來看看舊時監獄長什麼樣子？有哪些規定及歷史，算是不錯的一個停留點。我給它旅遊價值4顆星85分評價。

監獄建物保存良好，入內參觀需跟導覽團進團出，有一定品質的觀光景點！絕對是深度旅遊嘉義推薦景點，非常推薦給到嘉義旅遊的人！

嘉義公園訪問後、こちらまで歩きました。10時15分頃到着、10時半の案内になりました。午前中は9時半と10時半、あと午後2回、一日計4回のボランティアガイドによる案内があり、その時だけ見学できます。私の時は地元の方1名と私の2名のみ、ガイドさんは中国語のみでした。人数が少なかったので、所々で筆談などで説明してくれました。私は、以前に網走刑務所を見学したことがあり、それを思い出しつつ、類似点を確認したりしました。網走よりは小規模で、いかにも南国の刑務所といった感じでした。刑務所とはいえ、中庭などはなかなか素敵な建物でした。

2019年元旦（週二）中午初次造訪，館方人士在門口攔阻，表示館內正在進行大掃除，所以不開放參觀。但，官網所提供的資訊是：除週一休館，週二至週日皆開放參觀。結果，跟一大群相同遭遇的遊客一齊撲了個空。

The entrance is free, but the visit of museum is only with a guided tour, which takes about one hour. The tour is conducted in Chinese, but even if you cannot understand the language, you can guess many things by seeing displays. This prison is a construction of Japanese governing time, but very well conserved.
