The exhibits are rather ho-hum and not really curated well. Apparently from the updates, the exhibits and the video shown has not been updated in decades. The best thing about the museum is the clean toilets and the toy pig on the counter for calling the person on duty.

Nice place with different tribe's stuff and informative video and texts. It's worth visiting if you are in Chiang-Rai.

Interesting museum which breaks down the history of Hilltribes in Thailand and their differences in culture, beliefs and life including dress, houses, relationships etc. Only there for an hour max but lovely to see that local authorities recognise their heritage and working with them to preserve the history whilst increasing quality of life such as access to healthcare and education.

Excellent opportunity to learn about the hill tribes, many displays, artifacts, videos. Surprisingly, the hill tribes are not permitted citizenship in Thailand. They deserve attention.

We came back the second time after 8 years, but we notice no improvement in the layout nor in the pieces of art. The museum has to be reconsidered and updated.

チェンライの街中にある山岳民族の博物館です。コンテンツに関してはゴールデントライアングルにあるOpium Museumの方が充実していたのではないかと思います。こちらで一番印象に残ったのは、欧米人のマネキンが山岳民族の衣装を着ていたことです。ファッションモデルが着る服のように格好良く見えました。欧米人向けへの販売を目論んでいるのかもです。
時間があれば立寄る程度で良いと思います。

We went to the Hill Tribes Museum in CR, and while it looked like it was at its prime 20+ years ago, it had a lot of interesting information. It is run by the a foundation that seeks (sought?) to help the tribes, prevent exploitation, better health care, etc. The foundation pushes prevention of disease, HIV and unwanted pregnancies, along with respectful treatment of the cultures for the people. We enjoyed it, and it was a good "accretion" of information we first picked up in Chiang Mai at the Lanna Folklife Museum and the Highland People Discovery Museum. They have some interesting examples of things not at other museums, like a bird trap. And bird nests from weaver birds, with a description that explains the birds also catch living fireflies and stick them (still alive) in mud in their nests to illuminate the inside. Maybe they make a good snack later?

The museum also had a very good if old and tired (last updated 2003) timeline of the history of opium, focused on the political ramifications. A very digestible chunk of information to add to your Thailand savvy.

If memory serves correctly, yes. You will take an elevator up from the parking level and then the museum is all on one level. The video and some of the costumes are in a slightly different area, but I am fairly certain there was a small ramp to go access that. When we were there (mid week) it was not crowded at all and there was ample space to maneuver a wheelchair or strollers.

The staff at the Hill Tribe museum are very helpful and at the time of my visit included a lady from the hill tribes involved in weaving fabrics, creating a working exhibit. I did not ask about visiting the tribes, having done so on a previous trip. You should be aware however that such visits are somewhat staged, the people can be little more than exhibits on show for the purpose of tourist photos. During one of my visits I flew from Chiang Mai to Mai Hong Son, relatively inexpensive, where the weekly market included customers from the hill tribes, most notably ladies from the long neck tribe. The trip can also be made by road, although considerably more time consuming.
As for the location of the museum accommodation is readily available nearby. I stayed at the Nak Nakara hotel on the opposite side of the same block and have no hesitation in recommending it. I have also reviewed this hotel and is available via my review profile. Regards Roger

November to February is the best season. It's cooler in the north anyway. But the mountain breezes make this season very comfortable with very few mosquitoes.
