Few people pay attention to the bust of R.H. Blanton at the exit of Nihon Odori in Yokohama Park. The shogunate government, which promised to modernize the lighthouse when the country opened, requested that Britain send engineers. Blanton initially came to Japan as a lighthouse specialist. He designed a number of lighthouses in the natural environment of Japan, not only in Yokohama but also in ports such as Hokkaido, Mie Prefecture and Kagoshima. The Tsunoshima Lighthouse in Shimonoseki, which I visited three years ago, was the first Western lighthouse on the Japan Sea side. The beauty of the chalk lighthouse is impressive against the azure sea and blue sky.
In 1854, after Perry's landing in Japan successfully concluded and opened the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Peace and Amity, the United States next sent Harris, the consul general, to open ports and conduct trade, seeking to conclude the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce. In 1858 (Ansei 5), after negotiations with Tairo (chief minister) Ii Naosuke and others, a trade treaty was signed, promising the opening of new ports of Kanagawa, Nagasaki, Niigata and Hyogo, as well as the opening of Edo and Osaka. Concerned that disputes between foreigners and Japanese would arise in Kanagawa, which had been a post town on the Tokaido, the bakufu unilaterally changed the opening port to Yokohama Village on the other side of the river. Foreign countries were outraged by this and urged the opening of Kanagawa as per the treaty, but the port of Yokohama was eventually allowed to open, partly because of its deep water and the fact that it was a good port for anchoring large ships.
When Yokohama Port was first opened, the port was connected to the Yamate area, but fearing a conflict with foreigners, the Nakamura-gawa River was extended to clear the Hori-kawa River. The whole area of Yokohama Port became a Dejima surrounded by the sea and a digger, and a checkpoint was established near the entrance bridge. The inside of the checkpoint was called "Kannai" and the outside "Kangai", and the eastern part of the checkpoint on present-day Nihon Odori was designated as a foreign settlement (Yamashita settlement) and the western part as a Japanese settlement.
In 1866 (Keio 2), a pork restaurant was burned from the center of the Kannai toward the seaward side by the Great Fire of Keio, the "Butaya Housework", and the foreign settlement was devastated. Shortly after this, the Shogunate government and foreign legations discussed plans to rebuild the foreign settlement, and a street was planned between the foreign settlement and the Japanese settlement to prevent the spread of the fire, which was about 36 meters wide, in order to prevent fires from spreading to the Japanese settlement. In addition, the Yamate area is incorporated into the foreign settlement, and the Yamashita settlement is positioned as a commercial area and the Yamate settlement as a residential area. The street was designed by Blanton, and in 1875, the first Western-style street in Japan, Nippon Odori, was completed.
When the yellow leaves of Ginkgo biloba are at their peak, it's the time when the blue of the sky is becoming thicker and more vivid. The contrast between the blue sky and Ginkgo biloba is so beautiful that it is a picturesque landscape along with the historical buildings. While thinking about Blanton's achievements, we strolled through beautiful Nihon Odori, lined with ginkgo trees. By all means...

Nihon Odori is the name of the government district centered around Nihon Odori Station, which stretches from the north of Yokohama Park to Kaigan-dori in front of Osanbashi Pier, and is said to be the first Western-style street in Japan. Along the road lined with ginkgo trees, which are particularly beautiful in autumn, there are many historical buildings, making it a pleasant place to walk and perfect for a stroll.
