The lake is nice to look at but it's best to combine it in a car trip with other things to do in the area. I'd suggest a sand bath at Yamagawa if its cool out. Maybe eating somen nagashi at Tousenkyou or visiting the Ryugu "turtle"shrine. The shops are on the sadder side but easy to ignore if you aren't into knick knacks.
You can only see Lake Ikeda from the 3km stretch where the few shops are. It's a nice strip to go for a short walk along the lakeside. There isn't a lakeshore to walk on but the path along it is nice enough. There are loads of flowers in summer but at the end of October they were just fields of dirt. They may put winter flowers in, though. I don't know.
The best new thing:
There is a new coffee shop called Danken that opened in October 2022. Coffee and a few hot sandwiches with seating inside and out. It's in a prime location on the lakeside with the car parking for the lake being around it. It has a huge deck that I assume belongs to the shop. At the moment there aren't tables on it but it only just opened. It was a comfortable wait when I was there but I'm sure it will get VERY busy at times.
It's nice to go around the lake by car in about 20 minutes but you can't see the lake from the far side. You'll see Mt Kaimon for a bit. Trees have blocked any view of the lake there there was on the road I took. It would be nice if they cut back some areas to reveal views of the lake. There is a BEAUTIFUL view from a lookout area called Yasuragi Park. You can see Mt Kaimon AND a sliver of ocean.
My story (bicycle and car):
I went Monday, October 24th just after it started cooking down in Kagoshima. The high was maybe 25C. I tried to ride my bicycle around the lake. DONT DO IT!!! SO MANY MOUNTAINS!!! You can't see anything at all of the lake from the other side. I got 3/4 the way around pushing my bicycle about 2km of it. Then the mountains just got worse :) I only saw 3 cars the entire cycle. I made the mistake of going down to the shore where there was a small grouping of old houses and rice fields. The road ended (I didn't notice it on my app in the bright sun) and I was faced with a 2km climb just to get back to where I was. Then another 1km or two to get to the highest point. It would have been a long walk but I put myself into the situation. Luckily a local asked me where I was going (I live an hour away and speak Japanese) and actually took me on a tour with my bicycle in the back of his little white truck. He told me that when he was young the whole area of the mountains around the houses was rice fields and the views were clear. They are now huge stands of cedar so a lot has changed. So it ended well.

指宿方面に向けて海岸線を走り、少し内陸の道に入ると見えてきます。
九州最大のカルデラ湖なのですが、特徴のない丸い湖でなかなか観光資源が見当たらない中、ネッシーならぬ「イッシー」ブームが一世を風靡したことはある年代以上の方は記憶されているでしょう。
しかしながら南西に聳える開聞岳（薩摩富士）との画は、間違いなく映えるものです。

菜の花が満開で、とてもキレイでした。旅行中、回った先々の至る所で菜の花が咲いていた記憶があります。レストランの方曰く、イッシーはこれまで3回の目撃情報があるとのこと。湖は透明度が非常に高く、ゴミなども浮いていませんでした。湖畔では、紫芋のジェラートのお店もあります。甘過ぎず、さっぱりした味で絶品でした。なお、池田湖周辺の飲食店は休業中なので、ランチを予定している方はご注意ください。レストランも、そうめん流しもコロナの影響で休業しています。

道沿いにいくつかいっしー像っぽいものがありちょっと迷いましたがたぶんこれだと思います。サイズは看板を見るとわかるようにそんなに大きくないです。他のやつはピンクだったり木製？だったり、ドライブインの前にあったりしました。

昔、「イッシー」で有名になった池田湖。この湖の湖畔には１２月上旬にも関わらず、黄色の菜の花が咲いていた。近くのドライブインでの食事をさっと食べて、ベストスポットと思われる場所へ。菜の花を手前にいっぱい入れて、湖に浮かぶ開聞岳を撮影。時間は午後だったので、やや逆光気味。これがまたいい。輪郭が冴えてアクセントが強まるいい写真に。晴れ渡って空気も景色もいいので、気分がリフレッシュできた。

40年ほど前に巨大未確認生物の目撃情報があったという湖です。湖畔にはキャラクタライズされたイッシーや売店があります。
