Takamatsu is in Shikoku Region with Seto Inland Sea separating it from the Honshu Region. It is at the end of JR West service point and the starting point of JR Shikoku Railways. I didn’t intend to visit Takamatsu because my time in Okayama was limited. But when we missed getting off Kojima to visit Jeans Street, we decided to ride it to the end of the JR West Line and explore whatever it has to offer. I was glad we did it. We discovered the ruins of Takamatsu Castle, one of the three most important flat land castles on the sea in Japan.
JR West Seto Ohashi Rapid Marine Liner (seat reservation is not necessary) train crosses over Seto Inland Sea on a long stretch of Seto Ohashi and ends its service at JR Takamatsu Station. Tamamo Castle Park is just a short walk from the station. Today the site of the ruins is a city owned Tamamo Park, features a few remaining historical structures to exemplify its glory of the bygone era.
We visited Tamamo Park in early December but the vibrant colors of red maple in the mix of crisp green pine and Japanese oak trees and dry bed rock garden remained breathtaking. The scenic landscapes of Japanese garden Hiunkaku Garden is worthy of a leisure stroll. It was designated as a culture property of Japan in 2013. In the garden there were pine trees planted by Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun. The features of landscape designs include strategical layouts of stones and kara-gawa (river without water). A large stone bridge cut from one single granite stone was placed over the midstream of kara-gawa. The Hiunkaku was once the governing office and residence of the feudal lords. Today Hiunkaku is opened to the public for use of tea ceremony or flower exhibitions.
The main castle was demolished in 1884 due to its deterioration. But the base of the castle tower is still standing, and City intends to rebuild it. Other remaining structures are Tsukimi Yagura turret and its gate which served as a watch tower to monitor the activities of the Seto Inland Sea, security of castle defense, and announce the return of the feudal lord of its controlled clan. The castle moat served as a part of defense mechanisms, is connected to the Seto Inland Sea and a water gate was built to keep the moat water level regulated along with the changing of sea tide. The Sayabashi, a bridge that connects the main castle grounds Honmaru to the outer castle grounds Ninomaru, has been renovated with a covered roof.
To get there from Okayama JR Station, takes Seto Ohashi Marine Liner, about 52 min, then a short walk from the Takamatsu station.
Admission Adult ¥ 200. It is open all year-round from sunrise to sunset.
